I have 20 years of experience in the development industry in both local government and private practice. Townsville City Council provides opportunities to enable me to utilise my strengths and knowledge whilst providing ample challenge.

I manage a large multidisciplinary team at several levels (planning, engineering, hydraulics and civil construction) spanning across approximately 90 staff.  As a team we have delivered professional development, reviewed and maintained business management systems, executed audits, regularly prepare budgets, and developed on-going improvement procedures.
The establishment of a mentoring program for staff was something I introduced and was part of the management team to introduce a ‘Service Excellence Charter’ and a planning reform program that led to significant productivity gains and increased customer satisfaction.
Townsville City Council and in particular Development Assessment have a strong collaborative culture and dynamic forward thinking team based environment.
There is a relaxed work ethic with many social events contributing to an enjoyable work place that is positive and empowering and encourages professional development and job satisfaction.

What is the best part of working at the company?
TCC spends a lot of time and effort reinvesting back into the workforce, salaries are more than fait in regional Queensland.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is always far more work than people to complete those tasks, and the variable nature of politics which can mandate priorities other than what makes business sense.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Open managed with a typical top down approach which does allow for reasonable differences in experiences based on location and division.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There is always a steady stream of new challenges to add to the pre-existing backlog.

Log book servicing of cars and trucks, how to run the service bay section of fleet. learned prety much evrthing on how to service vehicles and trucks to ordering parts. Always is something different to do in our whole department, especially assisting the diesel fitters out on a job out field. The crew i work with all have the same goals and work ethic to make the place run smoothly. It is a enjoyable place to work as managment engage in what you do and show a keen interest. The hardest part of the job is probably waiting for the vehicles to show up for their allocated service

During the time that I was employed by the TCC opportunities of advancement were available which I did take advantage of. Continuous education in workplace health and safety, operation of different machinery, change in the workplace culture, the move towards multi tasking and the transition to computer based job administration were all encompassed in a normal working week. The most demanding part of cultural change was the integration of different work crews and central management. In all, working in a team environment was most rewarding.

Townsville Water..  Without a doubt the worst place in Townsville to work beside defence.
Very high turnover of Management, constant attacks on workers safety. Will use every legal avenue to destroy the permanent workforce to outsource work to contractors. 
Arselicking and backstabbing are a massive requirement for progression.
Only positive is a strong union presence to keep the terrible management at least half honest.  Management are more interested in Empire building than delivering services for Townsville




The Council provided excellent training and continual support throughout my employment. They were apt to suggestions on improving customer service. The hardest part was the beginning when the training was put into realism with real customer enquiries, however, it was very short lived due to the impressive support. I enjoyed all of the work day as the co-workers were friendly to work with.

Traditional work environment; gardening makes hay while the sun shines, just like always. There are many different activities tp learn  for long term operators, Rubbish collection affects everyone. The city has an extensive network that only management knows how it all gets done, its a pretty big day job to say the least.


Good people to work with on daily basis and always willing to help you with everyday work duties. If you were not experienced in the workplace duties, use of machinery or protocol of work duties, there was always someone who was willing to give me advice and assist me. 
The management were fair and reasonably easy to communicate with on a regular basis.

This workplace has had a number of narcissists gain positions of power. They set unnecessarily high qualification requirements. They are ageist and discriminate against experiences older people. They made 300 plus people redundant, losing their knowledge base and hiring less capable people at higher rates.

Every day provides me with a constantly busy and varied work life  with the opportunity to continue learning while on the job.  Townsville City Council has a flexible attitude to work/life balance.
