What is the best part of working at the company?
Meeting motivated students who are keen to do well in a supportive inclusive learning environment m.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Selfish insecure staff who think everyday at work should be about them. I’m very much including management in that group as well. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
No question about it… Each semester is fast-paced and challenging. Just like most others, the community services team at south metro tafe always has unforeseen circumstances getting in the way of things. 

Those challenges need engaged, well informed staff to deal with them. In fact, the process requires advanced participation at every level. 

And it’s something that would virtually be impossible without the support of management and the wider team. 

Long story short - The work environment and culture within the community services team at south metro tafe is poor. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
• Working 14-hour days. 
• Have to work every day in order to keep up. 
•  Approximately 100 students to manage each week, all needing support and guidance about their individual study needs. 
• Don’t get time to eat throughout a full day of delivery/lectures. 
• Only sleeping 3-or-4 hours a night because I need the extra ‘wake-time.’
• Literally ask certain managers for help and get none.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at South Metropolitan Tafe, where I have gained a great knowledge in the nursing field, that I now feel I can pursue with confidence and positivity.  Thanks to the great lecture team that supported all the students for 2017.  They are genuinely interested in the students work ethics and protocols that are required to be a professional in the Health Care Industry.

- Every day is full-on and busy.  It's diverse and demanding in a stimulating way.  
- I'm always looking for ways to improve systems to become more effective and more efficient.
- Immediate management is supportive of and welcomes new ideas.
- I job share with a lady who is as dedicated and committed to the role as I am.
- Due to Government constraints, being able to work enough hours to achieve everything can sometimes be difficult.  
- I love that my job is so busy, demanding, diverse, interesting, intense and stimulating = makes me thrive on achieving as much as I can on a daily basis, whilst giving 100% effort to a positive outcome.

The communication is poor from up to down policies are changed but no-one is told
people are scared for their jobs
Colleagues argue irrationally due to stress

Management is out of touch with what happens during a normal day at work.
Resources are getting thin on the ground. Broken and old fashioned
With redundancies lecturers are expected to do more.

I loved TAFE. I loved ensuring students were on the right path to a career they really wanted to do. It was wonderful to have the resources we used to have but its all getting tired and out of date.

I worked for TAFE for over 10 years 
I had a good work life at first. Trouble started when management changed.
New manager for my team seemed quite pleasant and supportive in person but behind all of the officers backs there was a bullying nature hiding.
You’re just a number there and VERY replaceable. I suggest to anyone who’s having a terrible work experience not to stay in it. It only ruins your health and life in general. Life is too short to suffer for anyone. Look after you no one else will.

Everyday is different, as dealing with people from diverse backgrounds, traditions and cultures. learning and passing on information to encourage further education and changes to work place practices to improve the lives of people I teach and the people they will provide services for.

The adult students are lovely and hard working. There are opportunities to teach part time or full time and move across campuses which is good. You can also choose your office/admin hours when you are hired under a contract.

Most enjoyable part of the job:
Working with students-supporting students during theoretical and practical placements.

Least enjoyable:
Unapproachable manager

My day is constant and fulfilling and co workers are helpful and nice people to work with. It is a varied position with interaction by phone and face to face with outside stakeholders.

Very little consideration given to task loading for the role. Government pressure on reducing staff has led to a culture of stressed and demoralised employees, alienated from management support.
