Primary objective
Provide a high standard of medical care to patients, admitted or non-admitted, within the Top End, which includes Royal Darwin and
Palmerston Hospitals Promote clinical standards and quality of care through effective and efficient patient management, which includes
attendance at teaching and unit meetings, outreach clinics in remote communities and regional centres throughout Northern Territory
(NT).
Context statement
There are three accredited Rehabilitation Registrar positions available at the Royal Darwin Hospital and Palmerston Hospitals for 2027. A
six or twelve month contract is recommended for any Advanced or Basic AFRM Trainee. The positions are supervised by four AFRM
Consultants. The rehabilitation services expanded in 2018 and moved to new facilities at the Palmerston Hospital in September 2018. The
whole service is now in a purpose built facility along with the Geriatric service, 24 Hour ED, Pathology and Radiology. The unit has a 24
bed general rehabilitation ward dealing with a wide case mix of adult rehabilitation. This ranges from stroke/neurological, amputee, brain
injury, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic and multiple trauma. There is extensive exposure to the Indigenous culture and opportunities to
attend Outreach clinics. A private hospital with a rehabilitation ward is also collocated at Royal Darwin Hospital. Outpatient clinics cover
prosthetics/orthotics, chronic pain, stroke and brain injury. Exposure to intrathecal pumps and botulinum toxin injections is available.
There is also onsite hydrotherapy facilities and extensive allied health service.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertaking initial assessment of patients upon admission and the daily progress assessment of the patient.
2. Accurately recording history, examination, management plans, investigations and actions taken in the patient’s medical records.
3. Communicating effectively with senior medical staff, nursing and other staff in relation to diagnostic requests, management plans and
consultations and follow-up to ensure that appropriate action is taken. Documenting conversations with treating consults regarding
patient management.
4. Requesting and reviewing necessary radiology, pathology and diagnostics to provide advice on the results to relevant Consultants.
5. Organising appropriate formal consultations after discussion with treating clinician and documenting specific consultation clinical
question(s).
6. Provide on-going support and information to the patient and family (where appropriate). Documenting family meetings when required.
7. Ensure that arrangements are made for autopsy when required and ensure death certificates are done in a timely manner.
8. Ensuring that discharge summaries are done in a timely fashion (within 48 hours of discharge) and sent to those involved in the after-
care of the patient including their GP.
9. Participate in postgraduate education, attend Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Medical Registrar Teaching and X-ray meetings, participate
in education of JMO’s, undertake audits and research projects.
10. Contribute to positive team dynamic by respectful communication including handover of appropriate clinical material prior to leave
and rostered days off. Attend and participate in all appropriate handover forums.
11. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Previous experience as a Medical Registrar or PGY3+ and willing to step up to a Registrar role with strong background in medical
terms.
3. Sound clinical knowledge in assessment and management of patients and a commitment to provide appropriate high quality service.
4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work
environment, as a team member.
