Primary objective
Work with the Learning in Country Team (LinC) to plan, organise and deliver cultural activities that support students to experience
a rich and meaningful learning in country program, partnering with Senior Warlpiri Educators, as well as cultural leaders and
custodians from across the Walpiri community to ensure that Warlpiri culture and language are at the heart of teaching and learning
across the stages of schooling, and empowering strong identity and connection for all students.
Context statement
Yuendumu School is in the community of Yuendumu, 300 km northwest of Alice Springs. The school operates across two adjacent
sites which include a Child and Family Centre (CFC) providing education and care services for young children and their families
from birth to school age; as well as primary schooling for students from Preschool to Year 6, and Secondary schooling for students
from Years 7 – 12. The schoolwork’s in partnership with Warlpiri elders, the community of Yuendumu and a wide range of
stakeholders to implement teaching and learning using bilingual approaches and Warlpiri knowledge, language and culture as a
cornerstone for achieving, engagement, wellbeing and learning outcomes.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Coordinate and support the delivery of cultural activities of the LinC Program across the Child and Family Centre, Families as
First Teachers and the school through consultation with team members, Walpiri custodians and knowledge holders, as well as
teaching teams
2. Facilitate and support cultural sustaining, generational knowledge transfer, through the integration of Walpiri language and
knowledge in areas such as health, the natural environment, traditional lore, the kinship system, education and wellbeing.
3. Provide young children and students with the opportunity to engage in tactile, experimental and play-based learning, key factors
in successful development of Walpiri children and young people.
4. Participate in weekly planning with the LinC team and school teams.
5. Coordinate communication with key stakeholders and organisations to support and facilitate the activities of the program.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated cultural knowledge and capacity to work respectfully within Warlpiri ways of teaching, learning and community
engagement.
2. Ability to communicate clearly, respectfully and effectively with Warlpiri stakeholders, students, families, school staff, and
external agencies, ensuring cultural safety and shared understanding across diverse language and cultural groups.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of Warlpiri lands, cultural sites, relationships and protocols, along with experience ensuring that
Country visits are safe, well planned, educationally purposeful, and aligned with school policies and organisational requirements.
4. Ability to work collaboratively within diverse teams, mentor others, manage administrative tasks, collect relevant data, and work
independently with initiative, self-reliance and sound judgement, even under pressure.
5. Knowledge of school operations, responsibilities and compliance requirements, with the capacity to support Warlpiri and
non-Aboriginal staff in delivering high-quality cultural and curriculum-aligned programs.
