About the role
The Director of Nursing will lead City Health’s perioperative services, ensuring the delivery of safe, compassionate, and consistently high-quality care throughout each patient’s healthcare journey. This pivotal leadership role will shape the patient experience by fostering a welcoming, supportive, and informed environment at every stage of care. By embedding the organisation’s values of Compassion, Respect, Quality, and Communication into daily practice, the Director of Nursing will strengthen collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and drive excellence in patient-centred care.
As a key clinical leader, the Director of Nursing will provide strategic oversight of clinical governance, quality and safety, workforce development, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role will champion a culture of accountability, innovation, and professional growth, building a high-performing nursing workforce committed to exceptional patient outcomes. Working closely with medical, embryology, and administrative colleagues, the Director of Nursing will support City Health in achieving clinical excellence, meeting national standards, and creating an environment where people feel valued, empowered, and proud of the care they provide. Through a strong commitment to learning, evidence-based practice, and innovation, this role will enhance patient outcomes and reinforce City Health’s reputation as a trusted leader in fertility care.
What you will do

Lead and role‑model patient‑centred perioperative care that reflects City Fertility’s values—ensuring every patient is treated with empathy, dignity, and clarity throughout their procedure journey.

Provide visible clinical leadership and direction across theatres, recovery, and admission/discharge to ensure evidence‑based, safe practice and positive patient experiences.

Accountable for the clinical governance for perioperative services: maintain robust systems for risk management (RiskClear), incident reporting, and learning; ensure timely review, feedback, and close‑out of actions.

Assist with but not limited to the commissioning of a new Day Hospital, including equipment procurement, development of policies and procedures, and support with practitioner credentialling.

Ensure continuous accreditation readiness and high performance against the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (Second Edition) and evolving guidance, embedding standards into everyday workflows.

Oversee infection prevention and control systems, including implementation and monitoring of AS/NZS 5369:2023 requirements for reprocessing of reusable medical devices in day procedure settings.

Manage compliance requirements such as reporting adverse incidents to state government agency LARU.

A lead member of the Medical Advisory Committee, responsible for minutes and any actions required from the meetings.

Responsible for growing and introducing of theatre specialties to the new day hospital.

Partner with theatre lists coordinators, anaesthetists, clinicians, proceduralists, nursing teams, and IVF laboratory leaders to optimise patient flow, first‑case starts, turnaround times, and overall list efficiency.

Lead workforce planning and development, rostering, and resource allocation to ensure safe staffing, scope‑of‑practice alignment, and cost‑effective service delivery.

Recruit, onboard, coach, and retain a skilled nursing team; conduct performance reviews, set development goals, and facilitate targeted education (e.g., IPC, medication safety, peri‑anaesthetic competencies).

Build a constructive culture of psychological safety, open Communication, and shared learning— facilitating regular team meetings, debriefs, and multidisciplinary case reviews.

Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and uphold secure, confidential records management in line with legislation and organisational policy.

Manage perioperative consumables, equipment, and maintenance programs; ensure safe use, preventative maintenance schedules, and readiness of critical equipment.

Analyse quality, safety, and operational data (e.g., incidents, audits, patient feedback, efficiency metrics) to identify trends, implement improvements, and report outcomes.

Collaborate on budget setting, cost control, and procurement strategies that sustain service quality while meeting financial objectives.

Lead local policy/procedure development and periodic review to align with NSQHS, AS/NZS 5369:2023 and quality management expectations (e.g., ISO 9001 frameworks where relevant).

Responsible for complaints management for Day Hospital.

Strengthen cross‑functional relationships with administration, laboratory services, and external stakeholders to support seamless, respectful patient experiences and continuity of care.
What we are looking for
-
Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse and eligibility for classification under the Nurses Award 2020 [MA000034], aligned at an appropriate Registered Nurse level (i.e. Level5) commensurate with scope and experience, in accordance with Schedule A—Classification Definitions.

Post Graduate Degree in perioperative nursing, Post Graduate Degree in Anaesthetics (Desirable)

Significant perioperative nursing leadership experience in day hospital/theatre settings, with demonstrated ability to lead teams, optimise theatre flow, and deliver safe, person‑centred care.

Demonstrated knowledge of NSQHS (Second Edition) and accreditation processes, with proven ability to implement infection prevention and control systems and reprocessing requirements consistent with AS 5369:2023.

Advanced communication and collaboration skills—able to build trust with patients, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues; provide clear direction; and handle sensitive conversations with empathy and professionalism.

Evidence of continuous improvement mindset and professional development (e.g., quality, risk, IPC, peri‑anaesthetic), with data‑driven decision‑making and strong clinical documentation practices aligned to City Fertility’s values.
