Registrar - Trainee - Anaesthetics
This is a Recruitment Pool for Fixed Term Full Time appointments for 6 or 12 months with the possibility of extension(s).
Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments may be made when similar vacancies occur. Appointments may be made from this pool until 20/08/2027. Appointments for this position will not commence until 2027.
Salary: MP Year 1-7 $128,760 - $175,802 p.a. (plus 12% superannuation and professional development allowance)
Position Profile:
The Registrar - Trainee - Anaesthetics will gain a broad experience in all areas of anaesthetic practice to develop the skills and abilities of a specialist anaesthetist. The Registrar will also be involved in routine duties of departments as determined by the Director and under the supervision and guidance of anaesthesia specialists. Anaesthetic Registrars will be rotated to, and will be required to work at, any hospital within the training scheme as allocated. Whilst in the training program, trainees will be supervised in accordance with ANZCA requirements.
Western Australian Rotational Anaesthesia Training Program (WA RATP) Profile:
The WA Anaesthesia Training Program is a rotational program that currently includes training in the following hospitals; Albany Health Campus, Armadale Hospital, Bunbury Regional Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Geraldton Health Campus, Joondalup Health Campus, King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, Midland Health Campus, Osborne Park Hospital, Perth Children’s Hospital, Rockingham General Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
The WA RATP coordinates the selection process, appointments and rotations through these hospitals for trainees in Introductory Training, Basic Training and Advanced Training Years 1 and 2, subject to ANZCA and WA RATP policies and guidelines.
The combined selection process and appointment of positions for this training program is carried out on behalf of the heads of departments of the above hospitals. The program is administered through the Medical Workforce department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
Rotation through the above hospitals allows the trainee to gain a wide range of experience in different hospital settings, covering all areas of general and subspecialty training required by the ANZCA training program. Trainees who are appointed to Introductory Training positions, and do not interrupt their employment to the WA RATP (except for reasons of parental leave, compassionate leave or extended sick leave) are guaranteed rotation to hospitals where all the required Clinical Fundamental and Specialised Study Units may be completed.
For trainees entering the program in more advanced years, and those who take a break in their training for reasons other than those named above, we will make every effort to meet their requirements for clinical unit completion, but this is not guaranteed.
Anaesthesia trainees are rotated through most of the teaching hospitals with specific rotations determined by the stage of training. Placements take consideration of trainee preferences and training requirements where possible, however rotations are not optional. Trainees may be required to work in a specific hospital or department to fulfil service requirements, even if the training time relates to a module already completed by the trainee. Overtime and rosters vary between the various hospitals according to their service requirements.

The training program has an active teaching program with long courses, involving tutorials and exam practice for the part one and part two exams. In addition, there is an Introduction to Anaesthesia Course and Part Three Course held by ANZCA.
There is extensive support available for the trainees provided by anaesthetists in the ANZCA roles (supervisors of training, education officers, and rotational officers), individual hospital teaching programs and mentors, and the trainee committee.
