## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and reliable Small Engine Mechanic to join our team and deliver high-quality maintenance, diagnostic, and repair services across a range of small engine-powered equipment. The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience servicing chainsaws, lawn mowers, garden tractors, and similar machinery, with a commitment to precision and safety in every job. This role suits a trade-qualified professional who works well both independently and as part of a collaborative workshop environment, and who takes pride in delivering efficient, lasting repairs to a diverse client base.
## Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical faults across a wide variety of small engine-powered equipment, utilising service manuals, diagnostic tools, and technical knowledge to identify root causes accurately.
- Dismantle engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms, and associated components, inspecting each part thoroughly for wear, damage, or defect.
- Repair or replace worn, faulty, or damaged components and reassemble mechanical systems to manufacturer specifications, referencing technical documentation as required.
- Carry out scheduled maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and engine tune-ups to ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently.
- Perform engine tune-ups and emissions checks to support compliance with relevant environmental and pollution regulations.
- Conduct pre- and post-repair testing of equipment to verify that all mechanical systems are functioning correctly before returning machinery to service.
- Maintain accurate records of all work performed, parts used, and service history for each piece of equipment in line with workshop procedures.
- Order and manage parts inventory, liaising with suppliers to source components in a timely manner and minimise equipment downtime.
- Provide clear and professional communication to customers regarding fault findings, recommended repairs, estimated costs, and service timelines.
- Adhere to workplace health and safety standards at all times, maintaining a clean, organised, and hazard-free workshop environment.
- Support junior technicians or apprentices through on-the-job guidance and knowledge sharing where required.
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (Small Engines) or equivalent trade qualification recognised in Australia.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience servicing and repairing small engines, including two-stroke and four-stroke petrol engines.
- Proficiency in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and fuel system faults across a range of small engine equipment.
- Sound ability to read and interpret technical service manuals, wiring diagrams, and parts catalogues.
- Experience using workshop tools and diagnostic equipment relevant to small engine repair.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform accurate, methodical fault diagnosis and repair work.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet turnaround deadlines in a busy workshop setting.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills for customer-facing interactions and service documentation.
- Current driver's licence appropriate for the role.
- Commitment to workplace health and safety practices and adherence to relevant Australian standards.
## Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with a broad range of equipment brands, including Husqvarna, Stihl, Honda, Briggs & Stratton, or Kohler.
- Manufacturer-specific training or certification from recognised small engine or outdoor power equipment brands.
- Exposure to warranty repair processes and familiarity with dealer service systems or workshop management software.
- Experience in a customer-facing workshop or retail service environment.
- Forklift licence or experience operating materials handling equipment within a workshop setting.
