English Tutors (With a focus on Primary level)
Selective and Advanced Reading & Writing | Casual | Regular and Relief Opportunities | Face-to-Face and Online
Come work with us at Altitude Learning
Altitude Learning is an established and fast-growing English enrichment tutoring centre providing Selective and Advanced Reading and Writing programs for students in Years 3 to 8.
Our students have achieved strong results, including scholarships, selective school entry and top positions within their schools. We have built a high-quality team of capable and committed educators, and we are looking for excellent tutors to join us as we continue to grow.
About the Role
We have opportunities for both regular weekly tutors and relief tutors.
Tutors may work across one or several year levels depending on experience and availability. We are particularly interested in applicants who are confident working with Years 3 and 4.
Our lessons and materials are carefully prepared, but great tutoring at Altitude Learning involves much more than simply reading from a lesson booklet. Tutors need to be able to think on their feet, adjust explanations, respond to students and make sensible teaching decisions in the moment.
We are looking for tutors who combine strong English knowledge with warmth, energy, good judgement and the ability to build genuine rapport with students.
Successful applicants will:
- teach Selective and Advanced Reading and Writing
- explain concepts clearly and age-appropriately
- adapt lessons when students need more support or challenge
- engage students actively and manage small groups confidently
- prepare thoroughly and arrive ready to teach
- work collaboratively with the Altitude Learning team.
What We Are Looking For
Ideal applicants will demonstrate:
- a strong command of English
- confidence teaching reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and literary concepts
- an ability to communicate complex ideas clearly
- genuine understanding of how to work with children
- warmth, enthusiasm and the ability to build rapport
- confidence working with younger students, particularly Years 3 and 4
- good judgement and the ability to think on their feet
- reliability, punctuality and strong preparation skills
- a positive, collaborative attitude.
For Years 3 and 4, we are looking for tutors who can keep younger students engaged, recognise when something is not working and adjust their approach rather than simply following a script.
Tutors must also be team players who are comfortable receiving and applying feedback. We see feedback as part of refining our teaching and maintaining a consistently high standard, rather than as criticism.
Face-to-Face and Online Tutoring
Tutors must be available for both face-to-face (weekends) and online tutoring (after hours on weekdays).
Face-to-face classes are held in Wahroonga, NSW, so applicants must have a reliable way of getting to the centre.
Class times vary. Our earliest classes begin at 8:00am, and tutors rostered for these classes must be able to arrive and prepare from 7:30am.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must:
- hold a current Working with Children Check
- be confident and appropriate when working with children
- be available for both face-to-face and online tutoring
- be able to travel reliably to Wahroonga
- have reliable access to a computer and internet connection
- be willing to prepare thoroughly and work collaboratively with the team.
A current First Aid certificate is desirable but not essential.
Formal teaching qualifications are highly regarded but are not essential for every applicant. We welcome applications from teachers, preservice teachers, experienced tutors, university students with strong English skills and others with relevant experience working with children.
Shortlisted applicants may be invited to participate in a brief teaching observation or demonstration as part of the recruitment process.
