Due to continued business growth and increasing demand for customised engineering solutions, we are seeking a motivated and technically capable Materials & Design Engineer to join our engineering team. This role combines technical engineering expertise with customer consultation, engineering design and project coordination to deliver practical structural solutions that comply with Australian Standards.
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and technically capable Materials & Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team. The role involves applying materials engineering principles to engineering design, material selection, structural assessment, fabrication processes and product development for customised aluminium and steel structural systems.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Materials & Design Engineer will work closely with customers, production staff and project stakeholders to develop customised engineering solutions using aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel and other engineering materials.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide engineering advice and technical solutions to clients regarding customised structural systems, engineering materials, material selection and product performance.
· Assess customer requirements and develop practical engineering solutions using appropriate engineering materials, structural design principles and relevant Australian Standards.
· Review engineering designs and recommend suitable engineering materials based on design specifications, structural requirements, strength, durability, weight, corrosion resistance, cost and environmental conditions.
· Evaluate the mechanical properties, durability, corrosion resistance and overall suitability of engineering materials, including aluminium, stainless steel and galvanised steel, for structural and access system applications.
· Prepare engineering drawings, technical documentation, design proposals and technical quotations in accordance with customer specifications and Australian Standards.
· Ensure that engineering materials, components and fabrication processes comply with project specifications, quality requirements and relevant Australian Standards, including AS 1657.
· Collaborate with production teams to optimise fabrication methods, manufacturing efficiency, product quality and material performance.
· Investigate material-related technical issues, analyse material failures and recommend corrective engineering solutions to improve product reliability, durability and manufacturing performance.
· Conduct material performance assessments and evaluate engineering materials to ensure they are suitable for their intended applications.
· Evaluate and recommend improvements to manufacturing processes, fabrication techniques and engineering materials to enhance product quality, operational efficiency and long-term performance.
· Liaise with material suppliers, manufacturers and internal engineering and production teams regarding material specifications, fabrication methods and product performance.
· Assist in resolving technical and material-related issues during the design, fabrication and installation stages of projects.
· Prepare engineering reports, technical documentation, material assessments and project records.
· Support quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives relating to engineering design, material selection, product performance, fabrication processes and manufacturing efficiency.
Essential Requirements
· Bachelor's degree (or higher qualification) in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering or another closely related engineering discipline.
· Minimum 1 year of experience in engineering design or metal manufacturing will be highly regarded.
· Demonstrated knowledge of engineering materials, including aluminium, stainless steel and galvanised steel, metallurgy, manufacturing processes and material performance.
· Strong understanding of engineering drawings and technical documentation.
· Experience working with CAD software and engineering drawings.
· Knowledge of Australian Standards applicable to aluminium structures and access systems, particularly AS 1657.
· Ability to apply engineering principles in the design, assessment and specification of structural systems and engineering materials.
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Strong communication and customer relationship skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
· Australian Driver Licence.

Pay: $80,000.00 – $90,000.00 per year
