About the role
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Cafe Manager to join our team at Little Sunshine and Co. in Townsville, QLD. This is a full-time role where you will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of our thriving cafe. As Cafe Manager, you will play a pivotal role in delivering an exceptional customer experience and driving the continued success of our business.
Position description:
The Employee will be responsible for the overall management and coordination of the café’s operations, including food, beverage and gelato service, to ensure efficient service delivery, high customer satisfaction and sound business performance.
The Employee’s duties include, but are not limited to:
- Overseeing and managing the day-to-day operation of the café to ensure smooth service, consistent quality and achievement of operational and performance objectives.
- Leading, mentoring, and supervising front-of-house (FOH) staff, and fostering a positive and high-performing work environment.
- Coordinating activities between front-of-house and kitchen staff to maintain an efficient workflow and timely preparation and delivery of food and beverages.
- Contributing to menu planning and reviewing food, beverage and dessert offerings with kitchen staff and management, including seasonal items, specials, events and promotional campaigns.
- Planning and supporting in-store promotions, marketing activities and special functions to attract customers and increase sales.
- Monitoring and managing financial performance, including sales, labour, food and beverage costs and other operating expenses, and taking appropriate action to assist in meeting sales, margin and expenditure targets.
- Arranging and managing purchasing and pricing of stock and supplies in line with budget and business requirements.
- Maintaining accurate records of stock levels, ordering, wastage, daily takings and other financial and operational information.
- Overseeing stock control, including ordering, stock rotation, supplier liaison and inventory checks, to ensure product availability and minimise loss and waste.
- Preparing and managing staff rosters, allocating duties, assisting with recruitment and overseeing induction, on-the-job training and ongoing staff performance.
- Monitoring customer service standards, and engaging with customers to evaluate satisfaction and handling feedback and complaints in a prompt and professional manner.
- Ensuring the café, customer areas and service points are clean, safe, well presented and operated in accordance with applicable food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety requirements.
- Providing hands-on operational support during busy periods or as required, which may include greeting guests, taking reservations, serving customers, barista work and assisting with gelato and other food and beverage service.
- Managing financial and administrative functions, including cash handling, reconciliation, sales reporting, and record-keeping.
Position qualifications
- Diploma in Hospitality Management or Food and Beverage Services or a related discipline, or completion of secondary education with at least 3 years of relevant full-time work experience in a similar role
- Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (preferred)
Experience
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in a cafe, restaurant, or similar hospitality environment.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising or managing a cafe or similar food and beverage establishment.
- Experience in staff rostering, training, and performance management.
- Experience in financial operations, including stock control, cost management, and sales reporting.
- Ability to provide operational support, including barista service and customer service, where required.
Skills
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Sound knowledge of financial management
- Knowledge of inventory management, purchasing processes, and supplier coordination
- Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple operational tasks
- Proficiency in POS systems, cash handling, and basic administrative functions
- Understanding of food safety, hygiene standards, and workplace health and safety regulations
- Additional language skills are an advantage
