It is about understanding the person, identifying what behaviour is communicating, working collaboratively with the people around them, and developing practical strategies that create meaningful and sustainable change.
As our Behaviour Support service continues to grow, we are looking for a Core to Proficient Behaviour Support Practitioner who wants to develop their clinical capability while making a genuine difference in participants' lives.
About the Role
As a Behaviour Support Practitioner, you will work with NDIS participants across a range of ages, disabilities and support needs.
You will be responsible for completing functional behaviour assessments, developing evidence-informed Behaviour Support Plans and working collaboratively with participants, families, carers, support workers and other professionals to implement effective behaviour support strategies.
Depending on your experience and capability level, your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting Functional Behaviour Assessments and identifying the function of behaviours of concern.
- Developing Interim and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans.
- Undertaking participant observations across home, community, school, day program and supported accommodation environments where appropriate.
- Collecting and analysing behavioural data, including ABC data, incident information and stakeholder reports.
- Developing proactive, preventative and skill-building strategies that improve participant quality of life.
- Identifying setting events, triggers, antecedents, maintaining consequences and environmental factors influencing behaviour.
- Developing practical strategies that participants and their support teams can realistically implement.
- Providing Behaviour Support Plan implementation and training to families, carers, support workers and other stakeholders.
- Monitoring participant outcomes and reviewing strategies based on data and feedback.
- Working collaboratively with Support Coordinators, allied health professionals, SIL providers, schools, families and other members of the participant's support network.
- Completing high-quality clinical documentation, progress notes, reports and recommendations within required timeframes.
- Supporting the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices wherever possible.
- Where applicable to your capability and authorisation, supporting the assessment, documentation, monitoring and review of regulated restrictive practices in accordance with NDIS requirements.
- Participating in clinical supervision, peer review, professional development and reflective practice.
- Maintaining appropriate participant records and meeting NDIS Commission and organisational requirements.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is curious about behaviour and genuinely interested in understanding why a behaviour occurs rather than simply trying to stop it.
You may already be an experienced Behaviour Support Practitioner, or you may be developing your capability at the Core level and looking for an organisation where you can continue progressing toward Proficient practice.
You will ideally have:
- Current suitability to provide behaviour support services under the NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner suitability framework, or the ability to meet applicable requirements.
- Experience working with people with disability and behaviours of concern.
- Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support principles.
- Understanding of Functional Behaviour Assessment.
- Strong written communication and report-writing skills.
- Strong observation, assessment and analytical skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with participants, families and multidisciplinary teams.
- An understanding of trauma-informed and person-centred practice.
- Ability to manage a caseload while maintaining high clinical and documentation standards.
- A commitment to ethical practice and the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices.
- Willingness to participate in supervision and ongoing professional development.
Relevant qualifications may include Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Behavioural Science, Education, Developmental Education, Counselling, Disability, Mental Health or another relevant discipline.
Core Practitioners Are Encouraged to Apply
You do not need to know everything on day one.
For practitioners operating at the Core capability level, we are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate strong foundations, professional curiosity, willingness to learn and the ability to respond positively to clinical supervision and feedback.
The right candidate will have opportunities to strengthen their capability across functional assessment, formulation, behaviour support planning, implementation, data analysis and complex behaviour support practice.
Our goal is not simply to give you a caseload. We want to support you to become a stronger practitioner.
Proficient Practitioners
For practitioners already operating at or progressing toward the Proficient capability level, the role provides opportunities to work with more complex presentations and contribute to the continued development of Mendara Health's Behaviour Support service.
Depending on experience, this may include complex functional assessment, restrictive practice work, multidisciplinary collaboration, practitioner mentoring, clinical review and contribution to quality improvement initiatives.

Essential Requirements
Successful applicants will be required to hold or obtain relevant screening and compliance requirements applicable to their role, which may include:
- NDIS Worker Screening Check.
- Working With Children Check where required.
- Current Australian driver's licence and access to reliable transport where travel is required.
- Right to work in Australia
- Relevant professional qualifications.
- Appropriate professional registration where applicable.
- Current First Aid/CPR where required by the position.
- Evidence of relevant NDIS training and professional development.
