UNITED WORKERS’ UNION
The United Workers Union (UWU) is seeking an experienced and strategic Research Analyst to play a key role in supporting our organising and campaigning work. Reporting to the National Research Coordinator, you will work collaboratively with our national research team and closely with campaign and industrial teams to support evidence-based wins for our members. The role can be based in any capital city in Australia and can be full-time or part-time with an option for fully in-office or hybrid working arrangements.
UWU’s national research team undertakes varied, interesting work spanning rapid-response analysis and longer-term policy engagement. In this role you will contribute to corporate and industry analysis, identify strategic leverage points, monitor policy developments, and produce high quality public submissions, internal briefs, member-facing reports and well-considered policy materials to support bargaining and public campaigns. You will also conduct survey design and stakeholder engagement, both internal and external.
This is a fast-paced role suited to someone who thrives on variety and can work effectively across a broad portfolio. Success in this role requires the ability to synthesise complex information quickly and rigorously, exercise sound judgement and union values, and manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Candidates with experience in care sector workforce policy, industrial, economic or strategic research will be highly regarded. A standout candidate will be able to demonstrate both technical proficiency and experience in a role that has given them a strong understanding of how strategic research underpins successful union bargaining and campaigning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strategic and evidence-based corporate and public policy research, submissions and campaign advice, reports, briefing papers and publications for a range of audiences;
- Conduct accurate, detailed and targeted research on industries and companies using corporate, industry, financial, economic and policy information and databases;
- Map and analyse stakeholders and identify opportunities for engagement.
- Conduct primary research with members to empower their voices;
- Monitor economic, industrial, environmental and social performance, outlook and trends of industries and companies to support organising goals and member growth;
- Develop, maintain and report on industry and campaign databases and other information management systems;
- With oversight, represent the union’s positions in stakeholder meetings and fora;
- Ensure that the Union’s values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and solidarity are upheld and that member voice is centred in everything we do.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- Research and policy skills: Strong analytical skills and an ability to quickly and accurately source a wide range of corporate, financial, economic and policy data and synthesise relevant facts and issues. An understanding of corporate structures, economic issues, policy and regulatory frameworks, with relevant experience in ECEC or aged care research or policy highly regarded.
- Relevant professional experience and qualifications: At least 2-3 years’ experience in a relevant role demonstrating familiarity with strategic policy or corporate research, and a tertiary qualification or relevant experience that has equipped you to think strategically and analytically.
- Communication skills: Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare engaging and succinct research briefs, policy submissions and campaign materials for a variety of audiences, verbally present your work in a convincing and interesting way, and contribute knowledgably to stakeholder discussions.
- Technical skills: Proficient use of office information technology applications, with an intermediate or above knowledge of Excel and database skills highly regarded.
- Project delivery skills: Demonstrated ability to manage competing tasks, timelines and priorities to deliver high quality research and policy advice that supports campaign objectives.
- Relationship management skills: Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement and interpersonal skills, build relationships of trust and respect based on consistently strong work, and work effectively in a rapidly shifting policy environment.
REMUNERATION
An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, including:
- Salary commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience according to the United Workers Union EBA (within an appointable range of $84,626 – $107,792), plus superannuation and leave loading;
- 16% superannuation
- 6 weeks annual leave with 25% leave loading
- 3 gratia days during the Christmas/End of Year period.
- Generous other leave and conditions.
- Flexible work arrangements - including up to two days’ Work from Home (WFH), in accordance with the UWU policy.
