About the Role:
Mental health presentations in emergency departments demand clinical expertise, calm under pressure, and genuine commitment to person-centred care. At the Lyell McEwin Hospital, you'll bring all three — working within the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network's Mental Health Service to deliver specialist assessment, treatment, and advocacy for adults at a critical moment in their care journey.
Your Role in the ED
Based within the Lyell McEwin Hospital Emergency Department and connected to the NALHN MHS Adult Service, you will work a Thursday-to-Monday roster across 8-hour shifts — providing consistent, experienced mental health clinical presence across the extended week. Key responsibilities include:
Conducting comprehensive mental health assessments and formulating evidence-based management plans for emergency presentations
Prescribing and managing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments within your endorsed scope of practice (or working towards endorsement as a Candidate)
Collaborating with ED medical, nursing, and allied health teams to coordinate safe, timely care and appropriate disposition pathways
Contributing to service improvement, clinical consultation, and the professional development of the broader mental health nursing team
What You Bring
Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse with Nurse Practitioner endorsement, or eligibility and active candidacy status
Substantial post-registration experience in acute mental health or emergency mental health settings
Demonstrated ability to conduct independent clinical assessments and manage risk in high-acuity environments
Sound understanding of the Mental Health Act 2009 (SA) and its application in acute care
A collaborative approach that supports multidisciplinary team functioning within NALHN's integrated health network
Commitment to trauma-informed, recovery-oriented practice aligned with SA Health's mental health framework
To be eligible for this position you must be
Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate with the notation of Nurse Practitioner.
Enrolled in an approved Mental Health course or holds a qualification in mental health practice.

An ability to effectively manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities and demonstrated resilience within a stressful and complex environment is essential to this role.
