We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Peri-anaesthesia Equipment Nurse to join our Anaesthetics and PACU team. This senior clinical role is integral to the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of peri-anaesthesia services across our dynamic, state-of-the-art Operating Suite. The Equipment Nurse provides advanced expertise in the management, coordination and optimisation of anaesthetic equipment, consumables, and medical devices, supporting both clinical teams and patient care outcomes.
OUR PATIENTS
Our Operating Suite provides comprehensive care for patients undergoing complex cancer surgery — from endoscopy to high-acuity robotic and multispecialty procedures. We care for patients across a breadth of specialties including colorectal, upper GI, hepatobiliary, breast, plastics, urology, melanoma and sarcoma, head & neck, and gynaecology. Patients also access specialised intraoperative treatments including brachytherapy and HIPEC.

THE ROLE: WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
Step into a pivotal, fast-paced role at the heart of peri-anaesthesia service delivery. As the Peri-anaesthesia Equipment Nurse, you will:
Clinical & Operational Leadership
Manage and coordinate all anaesthesia and PACU equipment, consumables, and relevant service contracts
Troubleshoot equipment issues and support clinicians with technical guidance
Represent the Anaesthesia Service in organisational equipment governance forums
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Work closely with: Anaesthetists, Anaesthetic ANUMs, Biomedical Engineering, OS Equipment Nurses, CSSD/RMH, Supply & Procurement, Clinical Products Advisors, and vendor partners.
Inventory & Resource Management
Maintain optimal stock levels
Manage ordering, backorders, product recalls, and equipment servicing
Oversee tracking of loaned devices and compliance with infection prevention standards
Education, Quality & Safety
Provide training on equipment and consumables
Support policy development and evidence-based practice
Lead equipment trials and contribute to service innovation

ABOUT YOU (SELECTION CRITERIA)
You are a highly capable, forward-thinking clinician with:
AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
Minimum 4 years perioperative/perianaesthesia experience
Advanced knowledge of anaesthetics, PACU, and/or theatre environments
Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and prioritisation skills
Proven ability to manage equipment/resources in a complex healthcare setting
Excellent communication and collaborative skills
Commitment to excellence in patient care and multidisciplinary teamwork
Proficiency with digital health systems
Desirable:
Postgraduate studies, prior experience in a similar role, CNS recognition or equivalent, and experience contributing to quality improvement and policy development.
HOURS & REPORTING
- Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts
- Work every Tuesday on the 3rd Week of the month to attend CSPEC Meeting
- Reports directly to the Nurse Unit Manager – Anaesthetics/PACU

Position Summary
The Peter MacCallum Operating Suite is a modern surgical environment with eight Operating Theatres, an Anaesthesia Department and a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). It delivers comprehensive peri‑operative care for cancer surgery patients through a multidisciplinary model supported by specialised, purpose‑built facilities.
The Peri‑anaesthesia Equipment Nurse is a senior clinician with advanced expertise in peri‑anaesthesia practice. This role is responsible for coordinating and managing the equipment, consumables and resources required for the Anaesthetic Service, and at times the High Acuity Team (HAT). The position demands high‑level clinical knowledge, strong time‑management, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a complex multidisciplinary environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical & Operational Support
Supports the Nurse Unit Manager with equipment oversight, consumable management and contract monitoring.
Works with the Anaesthetic Medical Equipment Lead to maintain and develop the anaesthetic equipment portfolio.
Represents the Anaesthesia Service in the Cancer Surgery Product Evaluation Committee (CSPEC), following governance and evaluation protocols.
Provides expert troubleshooting for equipment issues and maintains advanced knowledge of all peri‑anaesthesia equipment and infection‑prevention requirements.
2. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Works closely with Operating Suite Equipment Nurses, Perioperative Instrument Technicians, Anaesthetic ANUMs, Biomedical Engineering, CSSD, Infection Control, Procurement, RMD and external vendors.
Maintains effective communication and relationships to support seamless equipment function, servicing and product evaluation.
3. Equipment, Consumables & Inventory Management
Orders, receives and maintains consumables and consignment stock for Anaesthesia and PACU.
Implements strong inventory management practices to ensure consistent stock availability.
Manages supply issues such as backorders and shortages, and communicates impacts or alternatives promptly.
Handles equipment faults, repairs, recalls, documentation and returns.
Oversees maintenance schedules and service contracts.
Tracks loaned, borrowed or trial equipment to ensure proper return and documentation.
Ensures compliance with Infection Prevention and Control standards in equipment handling and cleaning.
4. Education, Quality & Safety
Provides education and support to colleagues on equipment use and consumables.
Works with the Perioperative Education Team to deliver training on new equipment or products.
Leads and evaluates equipment and consumable trials.
Contributes to policy and procedure development related to equipment and infection prevention.
Ensures compliance with OHS, legislative requirements, and safe handling, storage and maintenance of all devices.
5. Finance & Procurement
Assists the NUM with budgeting, financial planning and cost‑control strategies.
Conducts annual reviews of consumable expenditure against budget.
Works with the NUM and medical leads to source quotes, manage procurement processes and coordinate installation of new equipment.

Essential Requirements
Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.
Minimum of four years of clinical perioperative experience, demonstrating advanced knowledge across anaesthetics, PACU, and/or theatre environments.

Previous experience in a similar position
Relevant postgraduate qualifications in peri-anaesthesia or perioperative nursing.

Recognised Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) status.

1. Leads the coordination and oversight of all equipment and consumables used in the Peri-anaesthesia Service
Demonstrates leadership and accountability for all equipment- and consumable-related requirements within the department.
Liaises with nursing staff and the multidisciplinary team to identify equipment needs and coordinates the procurement of non-stock specialist items.
Manages equipment maintenance, including oversight of service contracts for peri-anaesthesia equipment and related services.
Facilitates organisational compliance with Health Purchasing Victoria (HPV) requirements relating to peri-anaesthesia consumables.
Collaborates with Peri-anaesthesia staff and Company Representatives to ensure consumable ordering practices align with the strategic direction of the Cancer Surgery Division.

Works with Practice Development Nurses to ensure staff are appropriately educated in the use, storage and care of equipment.
Ensures all equipment requiring servicing or maintenance is logged, tracked and returned to circulation within required timeframes.
In partnership with Biomedical Engineering, ensures service and maintenance records are complete and compliant with standards, service agreements and best practice.
Monitors consumable stock levels to ensure they adequately support peri-anaesthesia activity.
Ensures consumable ordering processes are efficient, accurate and streamlined.
Conducts regular reviews of consumable items to ensure appropriate stock turnover and timely monitoring of expiry dates.
Identifies and progresses opportunities for cost efficiencies or savings following appropriate consultation.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the Supply Department and the Hospital Clinical Products Advisor.
Represents the department through regular attendance at the organisational Clinical Products Advisory Committee.

Ensures recommendations arising from HPV tender processes relating to peri-anaesthesia consumables are implemented where appropriate.
Contributes to the development, review and maintenance of policies and procedures related to equipment management and infection prevention protocols.
2. Lead and Coordinate the Management of Prostheses (medical devices, i.e., CVADS) •Collaborates with Anaesthetists and Company Representatives to coordinate the ordering and procurement of medical devices, ensuring selections align with clinical requirements, safety standards and organisational priorities.
- Monitors the utilisation of medical devices to ensure appropriate, safe and cost effective use, and identifies trends or issues requiring further action.
- Provides oversight of billing processes related to medical devices to ensure accurate charging and timely realisation of prosthetic rebate revenue.
