About the Role
An opportunity exists for an experienced Cyber Security Systems Engineer to support the maintenance and operational performance of cyber security systems supporting ETCS, signalling, and operational technology environments within the rail industry.
The role involves performing technical support for cyber security infrastructure, assisting with fault response activities, and ensuring systems remain secure, available, and operational within a critical rail environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the client, operational teams, and maintenance personnel across both field and control centre environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and operational support activities for cyber security systems and associated communications infrastructure
- Monitor, investigate, and respond to cyber security alarms, faults, and system events
- Analyse firewall logs, event logs, system alerts, and diagnostic information to support fault finding and incident investigation
- Assist with cyber security incident response and system recovery activities while minimising disruption to operational services
- Maintain and support enterprise security platforms, next-generation firewalls, and IP-based network systems
- Support network performance monitoring, fault diagnostics, and system availability activities
- Assist with management of cyber security zones, interfaces, and secure network configurations
- Work collaboratively with the client and operational stakeholders to support maintenance and operational requirements
- Participate in planned maintenance activities, software updates, and system support tasks
- Ensure compliance with rail safety, site access, and competency requirements applicable to the role and client environment
- Maintain accurate records relating to maintenance activities, faults, and technical investigations
- Participate in after-hours or on-call support activities where required
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should possess the following qualifications, experience, and competencies:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in cyber security engineering, electrical engineering, information technology and/or network engineering
- Demonstrated experience maintaining cyber security systems within rail, transport, utilities, or other critical infrastructure environments
- Experience working with enterprise security platforms, SIEM systems, and next-generation firewall technologies
- Knowledge of European Train Control Systems (ETCS) either onboard or wayside
- Knowledge of IP-based cyber security networks, network management platforms, and fault diagnostic tools
- Ability to interpret and assess cyber security alarms, event logs, firewall logs, and incident-related data
- Experience supporting cyber security incident response and system recovery activities in operational environments
- Strong troubleshooting and technical problem-solving capability within integrated systems environments
- Ability to operate effectively within safety-critical and operationally sensitive environments
Desirable Experience
The following experience will be considered advantageous:
- Knowledge of cyber security standards applicable to critical infrastructure or rail environments (IEC 62443, NIST protocols, QGAF, or similar)
- Experience supporting operational technology (OT) or industrial control system (ICS) environments
- Experience working within mission critical operational environments
Rail Safety and Competency Requirements
Personnel performing work within rail corridor environments or operational facilities will be required to hold, or be capable of obtaining, the necessary rail safety competencies and site access requirements relevant to the role and client standards.
Competencies and access requirements may include, where applicable:
- Telecommunications competency management requirements applicable to network infrastructure environments
- Signalling and operational systems competency requirements where applicable
- Rail Safety Worker accreditation
- Compliance with rail safe working and access requirements
Personnel must also complete all required inductions, training, and site access requirements prior to commencing work activities.
