Department of Ophthalmology
Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. The position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Ophthalmology.
Successful applicants will be expected to participate in the Ophthalmology clinics, perform operative procedures required to an appropriate standard, be involved in the supervision of registrars and residents and be involved in teaching and education.
Appointees may be eligible for credentialing and privileging across all other facilities in the Western Sydney Local Health District
The Department of Ophthalmology at Westmead is a multidisciplinary service providing outpatient and inpatient assessment services, ophthalmic surgical services and community based chronic care management. The multidisciplinary team is constructed of Medical, Nursing, Allied Health (Orthoptic), Administrative, Community based & Managerial staff to allow the service to be a successful high demand service seeing approximately 28,000 Outpatient occasions of service, 2,000 Surgical occasions of service and 700 Community based occasions of services per year.
The outpatient ophthalmology service sees patients with acute, chronic and emergency eye conditions. The service performs routine and emergency eye surgery and offers a 24/7 on call system for Westmead Hospital.
Cornea surgery services include management of corneal perforations, corneal transplants across the full spectrum of disease and across multiple transplant techniques, limbal stem cell transplants, medical corneal management, ocular surface disease including cancer management, while complex cataract services include cataract surgery in challenging circumstances including distorted corneas, corneal transplants, unstable zonular support, and scleral fixation of intraocular lenses. There is collaboration with other medical and surgical specialties as well as other subspecialities within ophthalmology.
Applicants expecting to be awarded fellowship within 3 months are eligible to apply.
The position will be for a period of twelve months commencing February 2027.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Essential Requirements for Appointment:
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable)
2. Sound clinical knowledge in ophthalmology demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position
3. Completed >250 phaco cataract cases to demonstrate independence with cataract surgery
4. Complete a senior registrar year to demonstrate leadership/supervision skills of junior trainees and ability to manage clinic and theatre workflow
5. The chosen candidate will have a strong research background with publications in peer reviewed journals
6. The candidate will be expected to conduct research at WSLHD
7. Show leadership skills in supervising junior medical officers in clinical settings as well as research projects
Selection Criteria:
1. Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in the specialty.
2. Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty.
