## Stonemason
## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Stonemason to join our team and contribute to a wide range of construction, restoration, and monumental masonry projects. The successful candidate will bring hands-on expertise in cutting, shaping, and laying stone to deliver work of the highest standard across both structural and decorative applications. This role suits a trade-qualified professional who takes pride in craftsmanship, works well independently and as part of a team, and is committed to safety and quality outcomes. Whether working on heritage restoration, new builds, or bespoke memorial works, you will play a vital role in preserving and creating lasting stone structures.
## Key Responsibilities
- Interpret architectural plans, technical drawings, and project specifications to determine material requirements, dimensions, and appropriate installation methods before commencing work
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding safely and in compliance with relevant workplace health and safety regulations
- Prepare and seal foundations using damp-resistant materials, and apply mortar layers with precision using trowels to provide a stable base and effective binder for stonework
- Cut, shape, trim, and finish stone, brick, and masonry materials using a range of power machinery and hand tools, including angle grinders, chisels, and polishing equipment, to achieve specified dimensions and surface finishes
- Construct walls, facades, pathways, and other structures using stone slabs, large masonry blocks, and natural or engineered stone materials
- Check and maintain accurate vertical and horizontal alignment throughout all stages of construction using levels, plumb lines, and other measuring instruments
- Design and carve monumental masonry pieces, including headstones, memorials, and plaques, incorporating lettering, decorative motifs, and personalised elements to client specifications
- Repair, restore, and maintain existing brickwork, stonework, cement block structures, and heritage masonry, including repointing, patching, and surface treatment
- Select appropriate stone types, materials, and fixing methods to suit environmental conditions, structural requirements, and aesthetic outcomes
- Collaborate with site supervisors, project managers, and other trades to ensure work is completed on schedule, within budget, and to the required standard
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised worksite, adhering to all relevant WHS policies, codes of practice, and industry standards
- Liaise professionally with clients where required, providing guidance on materials, finishes, and maintenance of stonework
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of a relevant trade qualification in Stonemasonry or a related construction discipline (Certificate III in Stonemasonry or equivalent)
- Demonstrated hands-on experience working as a Stonemason in a commercial, residential, or heritage context
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, plans, and project specifications
- Sound knowledge of stone types, masonry materials, mortars, and appropriate fixing and finishing methods
- Competent use of both power tools and hand tools used in stonemasonry, including grinders, saws, chisels, and polishing equipment
- Strong understanding of scaffolding requirements and safe erection practices
- Sound knowledge of and commitment to workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations and safe work practices on construction sites
- Ability to work accurately and independently, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship
- Good physical fitness and the ability to perform manual labour, including lifting, kneeling, and working at heights
- Effective communication and time management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
- Current and valid driver's licence
## Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in heritage restoration or conservation stonemasonry, including working with lime mortars and traditional techniques
- Formal training or demonstrated experience in monumental masonry, including lettering and decorative carving
- White Card (General Construction Induction) or equivalent WHS certification
- First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain one
- Forklift or elevated work platform (EWP) licence
- Experience working on government, heritage-listed, or large-scale commercial projects
- Knowledge of relevant Australian Standards and building codes relating to masonry construction
