Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) — Job Description

Role summary

Designs, builds, and operates reliable, scalable production systems by applying software engineering to operations, automation, and incident response to meet availability and performance goals.

Key responsibilities

Own service reliability: define SLIs/SLOs, set error budgets, and drive reliability improvements.
Build, maintain, and automate production tooling for deployment, monitoring, alerting, and remediation.
Develop and maintain runbooks, playbooks, and automated runbook executions for common incidents.
Implement observability: metrics, tracing, structured logs, dashboards, and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK/Opensearch).
Automate repetitive operational tasks (infrastructure provisioning, scaling, failover) using code (Python, Go, Terraform, Ansible).
Design and operate CI/CD and release pipelines to enable safe, repeatable deployments.
Participate in on-call rotation, incident management, post-incident reviews, and long-term remediation.
Capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization for services and infrastructure.
Improve system resilience: chaos testing, fault injection, blue/green and canary deployments, and disaster recovery drills.
Collaborate with product, backend, security, and platform teams to influence architecture for operability and reliability.
Mentor engineers on operational best practices, runbook creation, and production-safe design patterns.

Qualifications

Education: BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Experience: 3–7+ years in SRE, DevOps, or systems engineering; senior roles commonly 5+ years.
Core skills: Strong Linux systems, networking, distributed systems understanding, and debugging at scale.
Observability & tooling: Hands-on with Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/Opensearch, Jaeger/Zipkin, and alerting/incident tools.
Automation & infra: Proficient in Terraform/CloudFormation, configuration management (Ansible, Helm), and scripting (Python, Bash, Go).
CI/CD & containers: Experience with Docker, Kubernetes (EKS/GKE/AKS), and pipeline tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD).
Cloud platforms: Practical experience with AWS/GCP/Azure services and operational patterns.
Reliability practices: SLO/SLI formulation, error budgets, chaos engineering, and capacity planning.
Security & compliance: Familiarity with IAM, network security, secrets management, and secure operations.
Soft skills: Strong incident communication, cross-team collaboration, ownership, and mentoring.

Working conditions

On-call rotation for production incidents; may require after-hours response for major outages.
Cross-functional, fast-paced environment with both project work and operational responsibilities.

Performance metrics

Service availability and SLO adherence.
Mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to recover (MTTR).
Change failure rate and deployment lead time.
Automation coverage and reduction in manual toil.
Error budget consumption and number of post-incident improvements implemented.

Pay: $75.34 – $98.12 per hour
