Victorian Rural Generalist Program
The Victorian Rural Generalist Program (VRGP) is a Department of Health initiative that supports the education, training and retention of medical practitioners in rural and regional Victoria. Established in 2019 as part of the Strengthening Rural Generalist Training Plan, the program aims to strengthen the rural medical workforce and improve access to healthcare for rural communities.
Rural Generalists are General Practitioners with advanced skills in areas such as emergency medicine, anaesthetics, obstetrics, paediatrics, Aboriginal Health, mental health, palliative care and adult internal medicine. They provide essential care across both community and hospital settings.
The VRGP operates across five Victorian regions—Barwon, Gippsland, Grampians, Hume and Loddon Mallee. Regional teams support medical trainees through case management, training pathway coordination and workforce planning, helping trainees navigate training requirements and establish careers in rural practice.
Regional Coordinators work closely with Regional Networks, Local Health Service Networks and key stakeholders to identify workforce priorities and support training pathways aligned to community need. Statewide oversight is provided by the Department of Health through the Statewide Reference Committee, which guides the implementation and ongoing development of Rural Generalist and General Practice training pathways.
