The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Family Violence Prevention Unit, you'll deliver culturally appropriate legal advice, representation and advocacy to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients experiencing or at risk of family and domestic violence. You'll manage matters across family, care and protection and civil law while supporting positive outcomes through early intervention and community engagement. Each day, you will:
- Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice, representation and advocacy to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across domestic and family violence, civil law, care and protection, and family law matters, including court representation and duty lawyer services.
- Communicate effectively with clients experiencing family and domestic violence and/or sexual assault, including those in crisis or with complex needs, by taking instructions, explaining legal options and providing trauma-informed support.
- Manage a diverse caseload and maintain high professional standards through accurate file management, legal research, knowledge of emerging legal issues, court procedures, and compliance with ALS policies and guidelines.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, stakeholders and community partners while contributing to law reform, policy development, meetings, conferences and professional initiatives as required.
- Deliver community-focused legal services, including outreach, referrals and targeted community legal education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and clients.
- Adapt to and utilise legal practice systems and technology effectively while maintaining professional competence, ethical practice and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated Solicitor who brings strong legal expertise, cultural awareness and a deep commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. You understand the impacts of family and domestic violence and are passionate about delivering culturally appropriate advocacy, representation and justice outcomes for individuals, families and communities. Key strengths include:
- A NSW/ACT Practising Certificate.
- Demonstrated understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and communities, with the ability to provide culturally appropriate and responsive legal services.
- Strong understanding of family and domestic violence dynamics and their impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities.
- Proven ability to identify and address complex legal issues affecting socially and economically disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality legal representation and advocacy while building trusted relationships with clients and communities.
- Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and work autonomously within a collaborative team environment.
