Primary objective
The Royal Darwin and Palmerston Regional Hospitals are seeking a urology registrar for an unaccredited urology position for 2027. This
position requires at least a year’s’ experience as a urology registrar and be able to perform basic urological procedures with minimal
supervision. The candidate would also participate in the Acute Surgical Service on call roster.
To be part of the urological surgical team providing a timely and high-quality service to the population of the Top End with a large
indigenous population with complex and interesting pathology not seen elsewhere in Australia.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assess urology patients referred from the Emergency Department and undertake consults for inpatients.
2. Admit, manage and discharge patients from the service under the supervision of surgical consultants/fellows with the aim of providing
the highest possible standards of care.
3. Participate in operations under supervision of fellows/surgeons.
4. Provide telephone advice to community clinics, GPs and peripheral hospitals.
5. Participate in the 24 hour roster for the Surgical Department as required to ensure the proper functioning of the service.
6. Provide supervision to junior medical staff and other clinical staff, including those in other Divisions as appropriate.
7. Provide medico-legal and other reports under supervision as appropriate.
8. Participate in research, educational and professional development.
9. Initiate and participate in quality assurance activities, peer review practices and continuing Medical Education.
10. Participate in other activities as directed by the Director of Surgical Services.
11. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. General registration with AHPRA.
2. Australian citizen or permanent resident.
3. Have appropriate training and experience applicable to General Surgery and Urology
4. Be able to participate in the Acute Surgical Service and Urology on call rosters at a Registrar level.
5. Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.
6. Demonstrated capability and interest in research.
7. Demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels.
8. Demonstrated surgical competency.
9. Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration.
10. Passion for rural, regional and Aboriginal healthcare.
11. An enthusiasm to develop cultural competency.
Desirable
1. Experience working in rural and remote Australia.
2. Experience working with Indigenous Australians.
3. Ability to provide outreach services.
4. Successfully completed the GSSE
