Who we are
Australia’s natural and cultural heritage is unique. Our land and seascapes are distinctive, home to plants and animals found nowhere else in the world, and to some of the oldest living cultures on earth. These environments and cultures are an essential part of our national identity, and visitors travel from across the country and the world to experience them. The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). We work to showcase these natural and cultural wonders to the world, demonstrating to all why these places are so special, and inspiring communities to become more invested in their care and future.
Beyond the spinifex sand plains of arid central Australia lies Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, one of three national parks leased by their Aboriginal owners to the Director of National Parks, and jointly managed by Traditional Owners and Parks Australia. Parks Australia assists with ongoing management of the park’s natural and cultural heritage. This branch also manages a rich and fascinating range of island ecosystems and habitats, including oceanic Pulu Keeling, Norfolk and Christmas Island National Parks.
The Caring for Culture and Country (CCC) section consists of a diverse team who, together with traditional owners, are responsible for the conservation and management of both the natural and cultural values of a jointly managed World Heritage National Park in accordance with both the Tjukurpa and Australian law.

The job
In accordance with the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Management Plan and Board of Managements vision, under the general direction of the Park Manager this role will be required to:
- Implement and monitor natural and cultural resource management programs including but not limited to threatened and invasive species management, translocations, fire management and cultural heritage management.

Progressing Anangu Traditional Owner’s vision for the future of the park and participating in the exchange of knowledge, experience and skills between Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, the community and the public.

Lead and report on monitoring programs of flora and fauna and key threatening processes.

Provide effective leadership and direction for the Caring for Culture and Country team of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and participate as an active member of the UKTNP senior management team to promote a collegiate and supportive workplace culture.

Facilitate community engagement and collaboration with Anangu Traditional Owners on all work programs and through the Tjungungkula Ngura Artunymara (Caring for Country Together) Working Group.

Coordinate research programs and environmental impact assessments in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and provide high-level advice on these matters to the Board of Management.

Build and maintain positive relationships with key regional stakeholders, universities, not-for-profit organisations and other First Nations ranger groups.

What we are looking for
We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the following:
Knowledge and experience
- Experience developing relationships based on mutual trust and respect for values and culture.

A demonstrated understanding of the legislative context of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Demonstrated experience in joint or co-managed protected areas and cultural heritage management, including threatened and invasive species management, conservation and monitoring, and managing procurement, contracts and budgets.

Ability to apply sound judgement and solve complex problems in a challenging remote environment.

Understanding of and ability to implement relevant WHS procedures and policies.
Skills and capabilities
- Provide a high level of leadership in a culturally diverse workplace, building team capability and monitoring performance.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise, consult, negotiate and manage conflict between staff, and internal and external stakeholders.

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent project management and planning skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy operational environment.
Desirable qualifications
- A background or qualifications in land management, ecology, archaeology and/or cultural heritage management will be highly regarded.
Additional requirements
- hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification,

hold and maintain a current manual driver’s licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle,

hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence,

Eligibility and other requirements
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
