Join our Intensive and Critical Care Team
The Transition year position is a role between that of registrar and consultant, with flexibility and graded responsibility to allow increasing clinical autonomy, and development of skills in research and administration.
About the role:
During the year, the trainee will aim to achieve all the key and enabling competencies expected of a specialist or expert, particularly those of Medical (clinical) Expert, Communicator, Collaborator (team worker), Manager (leader), Health advocate, Scholar (educator) and Professional.
Clinical duties for the role will include:
- Providing care and assuming responsibility for patients in the Critical Care Unit, under supervision of the ICCU Consultant, with graded increase in independence as appropriate over the term.
- Conducting ward rounds to plan, monitor and review the ongoing management and treatment of patients assigned to their care.
- Communicating with relevant medical specialty unit medical staff to arrange admission, ongoing care and follow up of patients.
- To be available for advice to junior medical staff where necessary in patient clerking, discharge summaries, maintaining charts, ordering and reviewing results and investigations.
- Contribute to the on-call roster as first contact for junior medical staff in the ICCU after-hours.
- Ensuring the timely documentation of the assessment, management and treatment of patients in the patients’ medical record.
- Perform and educate/supervise junior medical staff to safely conduct procedures within the ICCU.
There will be mandatory non-clinical fraction which will depend upon if the candidate wishes to experience general consultant practice or focus on domains of research, teaching, or echocardiography. Irrespective of domain, all transition year fellows would be required to engage in one of the several safety and quality standards within ICU and engage in various administrative roles. About you:
- Bachelor of Medicine: Bachelor of Surgery (MBSS) or equivalent
- Registrable with Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner
- Registered with CICM as ICM trainee, if applying for trainee position
- Effective communication skills both written and oral.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- Experience to include clinical work in the specialty, teaching and research
- Experience in MET (Medical Emergency Team)
- ICU and/or Anaesthesia experience with airway competence
Assessment Criteria:
CICM trainee Applicants are requested to mention their training status, and their plans for the next two years. The TY year applications should provide expression of interest towards one of the four paths – general, echocardiography, research and teaching.

As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as Advanced Trainee will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.
