Are you an ANZCA trainee looking for an out-of-the-ordinary provisional fellowship experience?

The Department of Anaesthesia at John Hunter Hospital is offering several exciting provisional fellowship opportunities across a broad range of clinical and sub-specialty areas including general and regional anaesthesia, retrieval medicine, and simulation fellowships. Trainees with interests in simulation, medical education, or Human Factors are invited to apply for our established simulation fellowships, including our pioneering Human Factors (Quality & Safety) Fellowship established in 2017.

Applicants with experience equivalent to four years of ANZCA training, or those embarking on the ANZCA SIMG pathway, may be considered for appointment.

Where you’ll be working

Anaesthesia training at the John Hunter Hospital campus offers a rare opportunity to be involved in anaesthesia across the lifespan at a single location. We provide exposure to adult, paediatric, trauma, cardiothoracic, neuro (including interventional radiology), complex head and neck, major vascular, and obstetric anaesthesia.

In addition, fellows have opportunities to participate in our active and highly regarded regional anaesthesia and perioperative services and, for successful applicants, the Hunter Retrieval Service, which provides primary and secondary retrieval services across the district.

Interested trainees may apply to work 0.5 FTE in the Hunter New England Simulation Centre (HNESC), one of the busiest and longest-running simulation centres in Australia. The centre provides simulation-based education for practising clinicians across all disciplines and supports patient safety and systems improvement initiatives across the health district.

These fellowship positions are suited to trainees with interests in simulation-based education, Human Factors, healthcare quality and safety, and systems improvement. Established in 2017, our Human Factors (Quality & Safety) Fellowship was the first of its kind in Australia and remains a unique opportunity to combine anaesthesia, simulation, and systems-focused healthcare improvement within a major tertiary referral network.

Newcastle is geographically blessed with stunning beaches, inland waterways, coastal walks, great sporting teams, a strong sense of community, and close proximity to both the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens. We have everything except traffic!

What you’ll be doing

Successful candidates will provide supervised specialist clinical services to patients across the Hunter New England region while undertaking learning and professional development opportunities towards attainment of Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

Our fellowship positions provide an excellent opportunity for trainees seeking consolidation of clinical skills and increasing autonomy within a well-supported environment. Applicants should indicate the sub-specialty areas they wish to apply for. Fellows will also have the opportunity to work, with support, on the consultant after-hours roster. Previous fellows consistently describe this as one of the most valuable aspects of the fellowship, assisting the transition from registrar to consultant practice.

Candidates appointed to simulation or Human Factors fellowships will work 50% of their time within the HNESC and 50% in clinical anaesthesia. Fellows will gain experience in the development, delivery, and debriefing of team-based simulation activities for educational and systems improvement purposes.

Candidates appointed to retrieval/anaesthesia fellowships will work 50% of their time with the Hunter Retrieval Service and 50% in clinical anaesthesia.

Opportunities for part-time training are available by negotiation. Several positions are available for both 6- and 12-month terms, including mid-year starts. Trainees expecting to transition to PFY in late 2025 may also be considered for appointment.

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
Completion of minimum of 4 years clinical experience in an accredited training position in Anaesthesia recognised by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and successful completion of all elements of Advanced Training
Success in the Final Fellowship examination of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists OR equivalent overseas
Demonstrated high level communication skills, both written and verbal, appropriate for an anaesthetist
Demonstrated ability to function harmoniously, efficiently and effectively as part of high-performing team
Demonstrated capacity to work independently, and exercise initiative and judgment in prioritising time and resources
Demonstrated commitment to scholarship, including learning and teaching, and an understanding of the role of the clinical review process, audit and research in anaesthesia
An interest in a specific area of the specialty for further development
