Basic Trainee – Western Anaesthesia Rotational Scheme
A position is currently available for a Trainee in Anaesthetics to be appointed to the Western Anaesthesia Rotational Scheme position.
The Western Anaesthesia Rotational Scheme is based in the Western NSW Local Health District centred on Dubbo and Orange. Both hospitals are accredited for two years’ ANZCA training and both hospitals have Provisional Fellow appointment. You can expect four years’ employment on the scheme subject to satisfactory progress. Although the pattern of training may vary for individual trainees, you can expect to spend one year of basic training at each of Dubbo and Orange Base Hospitals, your AT1 year on secondment to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital or Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney and then back to Western NSW for ATY2.
You will be participating in all activities of the Departments of Anaesthesia at the hospitals in the rotation. In WNSW, this includes the administration of general and regional anaesthetic for general surgery, Orthopaedics, Radiology, ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dental and Emergency Theatre. The year at RPA is required to meet the volumes of practice in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery (and experience of one ORIF mandible). It is expected that you will sit the primary examination at the first sitting in BTY2 and the final examination at the first sitting in ATY2.
This position would suit an applicant who is presently an unaccredited trainee or a basic ANZCA trainee.
The Dubbo and Orange Health Services are major rural referral Hospitals and part of the Western NSW Local Health District. Both provide a range of acute inpatient and ambulatory care services including general medical and surgical, maternity, gynaecology, paediatrics, rehabilitation, critical care, mental health, renal dialysis, oncology, palliative care, hospital in the home and diagnostic services.

Dubbo Health Service
Dubbo Health Service has undergone remarkable transformations under the Dubbo Hospital Redevelopment project. With Stages 1 and 2 ($91.3 million) complete, the final Stages 3 and 4 ($150 million) which include:
- A new Emergency Department and Short Stay Unit
- A new Medical Imaging Unit
- A new Ambulatory Care Unit
- A new Renal Dialysis Unit (originally part of 1 and 2 works)
- A new Critical Care Floor comprising of:
- Coronary Care/Stroke Unit
- Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (and Angiography Laboratory space)
- A new front of house entry and drop off zone
- A new Front of House entry and drop off zone
- Upgrade of Women’s and Children’s Community Health; and
- Additional car parking on campus.

Orange Health Service
Orange Health Services is a 270-bed major non-metropolitan referral hospital, serving a population of 300,000. It constitutes the largest Rural Campus in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the regional trauma centre for Western NSW and has a fully FACEM staffed ED. The Intensive Care Unit is the referral unit for the Local Health District. It is a level 5 unit and is staffed accordingly. There are a comprehensive range of specialist services including almost all medical and surgical services, with the exception of spinal, burns, cardiothoracic and neurosurgical. Of note, there are services such as interventional cardiology, and endovascular suite, and excellent on-site digital radiology, including a 3T MRI and 2 LINACs for radiation oncology. Orange Health Service also has acute specialists in cardiology, renal, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, haematology, neurology, ophthalmology and specialists in medical and radiation oncology. There are also local specialists in palliative care, nuclear medicine and dermatology.

Orange Health Service is a teaching hospital associated with the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University. There is an excellent record of success in college professional exams and also future placement with metropolitan hospital training programs.
Prince of Wales Hospital
Prince of Wales Hospital is located in the Southern Eastern Sydney Local Health District and is one of the largest LHD’s in Sydney, covering a geographical area of 468 square kilometres from Sydney’s central business district to the Royal National Park. They proudly deliver health care to around 930,000 residents across the local government areas of Woollahra, Waverly, Randwick ,Bayside, Kogarah, Hurstville and Sutherland shire. They also provide a key role in helping residents of Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. They have around 50,000 admissions to the inpatient units yearly with over 15 different specialist services units across the hospital. POW is affiliated with various Universities and premier medical teaching facilities which enables their staff to provide excellence in healthcare.
Royal Prince Alfred hospital is located in the Sydney Local Health District and is a major referral centre from regional sites. It has almost 1,200 beds and a theatre complex comprising of 8 theatres. RPAH (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital) has over 20 specialist services including colorectal surgery
The NSW government has committed $940 million to the redevelopment to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital which is the most significant investing in the 140-year history of the hospital, and this will deliver a new hospital building and refurbishment of existing spaces. This will help support the world-leading services provided at RPA for the 740,000 people who live in the Sydney Local Health District and more than one million people who come into the district each day to work, study and visit.

Essential Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
Completion of at least three (3) postgraduate years of medical practice or four (4) postgraduate years if presently a basic ANZCA trainee.
Valid NSW Working with Children check.
Cleared National Police check.
Aged Care Check for Australian Government funded positions.

8. Demonstrated orientation to rural/regional practice through life experiences, medical school and/or residency, outlining evidence of commitment to the provision of health care in a rural setting, preferably with experience of rural or regional medicine.
