Innovation is one of Maitland Emergency Department’s defining strengths. The department is known for innovation, problem solving, and forward-thinking services design, with several models now shaping statewide practice. The highly functional ESSU has informed the NSW Model of Care, while the Generalist Emergency Nurse Practitioner program has become a benchmark for NP development across the state. An integrated Mental Health Nurse Practitioner model - led by highly skilled clinicians embedded in the ED – provides both exceptional patient support and valuable education for doctors.
Education is a core focus at Maitland. Trainees can expect structured teaching, protected learning time, regular simulation, direct bedside coaching and meaningful opportunities for skill development and advancement. Supervisors are invested, enthusiastic, and committed to helping trainees build capability, clinical judgement and professional identity.
As part of the Accredited Training Network, you’ll also have access to a wide range of specialty experiences, including Toxicology, Intensive Care Medicine, Pre-Hospital Retrieval, Anaesthetics, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, and Paediatric inpatient medicine. Rotations available across multiple sites, including John Hunter, Tamworth, Calvary Mater, Port Macquarie and Belmont, will expand your clinical exposure and support your development to become a well-rounded FACEM.

Your Training Experience at Maitland Emergency Department
As a trainee at Maitland Hospital you’ll be part of Network 4, an established group of ACEM-accredited sites designed to support your success at every stage of training. Your day-to-day experience is shaped by strong supervision, protected education and a structure that helps you grow clinically while maintaining balance.
You’ll have access to:
- A structured curriculum for TS1–TS4 trainees
- Intensive exam support for Primary, Written, and OSCE assessments
- Regular simulation training, including trauma, paediatrics, and high-fidelity scenarios
- Protected weekly network teaching sessions
- Opportunities to rotate through ICU, retrieval medicine, and sub-specialties across the district
Maitland’s case-mix offers exceptional breadth, with exposure to complex adult and paediatric presentations, mental health within a Designated Mental Health Facility, toxicology and toxinology, general surgery and orthopaedics, general paediatrics, O&G, cardiology, general medicine and oncology. This diversity ensures trainees develop confidence and capability across the full spectrum of emergency presentations.
With a consistently highly regarded education program and engaged FACEM staff on site 07:00 to midnight every day (supported by a responsive on-call service outside these hours) you’ll have ready access to supervision, advice, and real-time learning whenever you need it.
