In August 2026, the practice will open a new medical centre in Merimbula, NSW, with further expansion to Gungahlin, ACT. These new locations reflect our continued commitment to delivering high-quality primary care services to patients and families across the communities we serve.
About the Role
Smith Street Medical Centre is seeking a passionate and dedicated Primary Care Nurse / Registered Nurse to join our dynamic healthcare team at our new Merimbula medical centre, opening in August 2026.
As a Primary Care Nurse, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality nursing care and clinical support to our valued patients. The successful applicant will work closely with general practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff to support safe, effective and patient-centred care in a primary care environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for patients in accordance with accepted nursing practice, clinical standards and the policies of Smith Street Medical Centre.
- Working in consultation with general practitioners, allied health professionals and other members of the healthcare team to coordinate patient care.
- Providing nursing interventions, treatments and therapies, including the administration of medications, immunisations and wound care, and monitoring patient responses to treatment and care plans.
- Conducting patient assessments, observations and basic diagnostic tests in a primary care setting.
- Promoting health and assisting in the prevention of illness by participating in patient education, preventative health initiatives and other health promotion activities.
- Answering patient and family questions and providing information about treatment, care plans, health management and follow-up requirements.
- Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records, clinical notes and documentation.
- Assisting with general medical and minor surgical procedures and treatments under the supervision of medical practitioners.
- Supervising and coordinating the work of Enrolled Nurses and other healthcare workers where required.
- Adhering to all relevant clinical guidelines, infection control procedures, workplace health and safety requirements and patient safety standards.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required
Applicants must be able to demonstrate:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia / AHPRA.
- At least two years of relevant nursing experience in a general medical setting, ideally within a primary care, general practice or community health environment.
- Strong clinical skills and the ability to prioritise and manage a diverse patient caseload.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- A commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Demonstrated understanding of infection control, workplace health and safety, quality assurance and patient safety principles.
- Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly within full-time or part-time working arrangements.
Desirable Criteria
Experience in one or more of the following areas will be highly regarded:
- General practice or medical centre nursing;
- Chronic disease management;
- Immunisations;
- Wound care;
- Health assessments;
- Preventative health and patient education;
- Use of general practice clinical software.
