Job location
Forensicare is the statutory agency responsible for the provision of adult forensic mental health services across Victoria.
Forensicare provides specialist mental health services at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in the Marrmak Unit, a 20-bed residential program for female prisoners with an intensive outreach program and a therapeutic day program. There is a strong focus on providing a healing environment not only for people in prisons, but importantly also one that supports the well-being and safety of all staff. This approach recognises that many women who are imprisoned are also victims of crime and have challenging mental health conditions as a result. The word Marrmak is from the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people meaning ‘safe’.
About the Role:
The psychologist (grade 2) provides clinical psychology expertise to the Marrmak Unit and Forensicare’s services at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. The psychologist undertakes treatment and assessments for patients admitted to the unit and provides consultation and advice on clinical matters to the multi-disciplinary team. They will also complete psychological reports as required.
Duties:
- Psychological assessment of a range of mental health issues, including high-prevalence mental health disorders, personality disorders, psychosis and trauma symptomatology
- Provides individual and/or group interventions to promote use of effective coping skills for managing mental health difficulties
- Contributes to patient risk management plans in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
- Provides consultation and liaison with psychologists with Corrections Victoria and Forensicare concerning patients from the Marrmak program.
- Providing recovery focused, evidenced based psychological interventions
About You:
- Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
- Experience in providing psychological services in forensic mental health and related settings is preferable.
- Knowledge and experience working with female offenders and/or female psychiatric patients.
- Knowledge and experience working with personality disorder and high prevalence mental health disorders.
- Experience working in a correctional service or a forensic mental health service is desirable but not required.
What you need:
- Hold general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) or, for overseas-trained psychologists, be eligible for a PsyBA transitional program to attain general registration.
- Has completed a minimum of a Level 3 and 4 APAC-accredited Psychology training sequence (i.e., Masters or Doctorate) in one or more of the following Areas of Practice Endorsement (AoPE): Clinical Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, and/or Forensic Psychology.
- Must have an Area of Practice Endorsement (AoPE) in clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and/or forensic psychology.
- Psychologists with Forensic AoPE alone will need to demonstrate the necessary education, training, and experience in clinical psychology needed to work in forensic mental health settings
