VMIA is seeking a Claims Specialist – General Liability Claims for a 12-month fixed-term contract. Join VMIA as a Claims Specialist and play a key role in delivering client-centred liability claims management for the Victorian public sector. You will manage complex claims end-to-end, collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders, and contribute to building a confident and resilient Victoria through best-practice claims solutions.
Total remuneration package up to $149,000 (inclusive of superannuation).

As a Claims Specialist within the General Liability Claims team, you will manage a portfolio of liability claims from lodgement through to resolution. You will be responsible for policy interpretation, liability assessment, reserving, negotiation, settlement and recovery opportunities while delivering timely, defensible and client-focused outcomes.
Working within the Risk, Insurance and Claims Solutions (RICS) Division, you will contribute to best-practice claims management, support client recovery, mitigate risk exposure and maintain VMIA's reputation for service excellence.
Manage liability claims from initiation to resolution.
Interpret policy coverage and legislative frameworks to assess indemnity, liability and claim exposure.
Establish, monitor and adjust claim reserves.
Negotiate settlements and recovery opportunities.
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, legal providers, mediators and other stakeholders.
Manage sensitive and complex client interactions, including mediations and settlement discussions.
Collaborate with Claims, Legal, Underwriting, Risk Advisory, Operations & Insights and Strategy teams.
Ensure compliance with regulatory, audit and governance requirements.
Contribute to process improvements, knowledge sharing and uplift initiatives.
Identify claims trends and insights to support product development and improved claims responses.
Promote a positive, accountable and collaborative team culture.
You will work closely with the Claims Portfolio Manager, Head of Claims Practice and colleagues across Claims Practice, Historical Claims and Claims Strategy teams. The role also involves collaboration with Underwriters, Risk Advisors, Legal teams, Operations & Insights, clients, insurers, barristers, mediators and external service providers.
You are a resilient and client-focused claims professional with experience managing liability claims within insurance, legal or financial services environments. You possess strong analytical, negotiation and decision-making skills and can confidently manage complex and sensitive matters.
You are an effective communicator and relationship builder who thrives in high-pressure environments, embraces continuous improvement and demonstrates sound professional judgement. Experience within public sector environments and complex legal or regulatory frameworks will be highly regarded.
Minimum 3 years' experience in end-to-end claims management or a related field.
Experience managing liability claims, including combined liability, employment practices liability, class actions and direct claimant matters.
Background in insurance, legal practice, employment law or financial services.
Strong analytical, negotiation and decision-making skills.
Experience using Claims Management systems and governance frameworks.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Understanding of public sector environments and risk management principles (desirable).
Associate/Fellow of ANZIIF (desirable).
Qualifications in Business, Commerce, Finance, Law or related disciplines (advantageous but not essential).
Must satisfy APRA Fit and Proper Person requirements.
