About the Opportunity
The Junior AI Enablement Engineer is an early-career software engineer specialising in AI engineering, supporting the build, test, and operation of VicRoads’ AI engineering capability. The role works alongside more senior engineers to deliver AI platform components, contribute to AI-first delivery across the engineering portfolio, and build experience across modern AI engineering tools and patterns. The role is grounded in strong engineering fundamentals, with a focus on testing, documentation, and continuous learning under the technical direction of more senior engineers.
- Planning & Design: Contribute to design discussions for AI platform components and product features while learning from senior engineers, support the documentation of design decisions and technical patterns to ensure they are clear and reusable, and provide input on usability and developer experience improvements as part of the engineering team.
- Evaluation & Implementation: Support the build of AI platform components—including model integration, sandbox environments, workflows, and tooling—while contributing to AI‑first product delivery across frontend and backend tasks, integration testing, and bug fixes; develop and maintain automated tests across AI platform components and AI‑enabled products; and, under guidance, use agentic engineering tools to validate and deliver AI‑generated code with the same engineering discipline, rigour, and quality standards as hand‑written code.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with the AI Enablement Lead Engineer and AI Enablement Engineer as part of a collaborative, high‑quality engineering team, engage with internal users of AI platform components and sandbox environments to gather feedback and surface issues, and author and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and reference materials that enable safe adoption of AI tools and patterns across teams.
- Mentoring and Leadership: Build personal capability across the AI engineering toolchain through deliberate practice, structured learning, and hands-on contribution, while supporting the development of training content and the agentic engineering community of practice, and maintaining shared knowledge and reference materials as a single source of truth for AI tools, patterns, and policies.
About you
You are an early‑career software engineer with a strong foundation in modern engineering practices and a genuine interest in AI‑enabled systems. You bring 1–3 years of experience working in an agile DevOps environment (or equivalent experience through internships, open‑source contributions, or substantial personal projects), with working proficiency in Python and/or modern JavaScript/TypeScript and a commitment to writing clean, testable code. You are familiar with CI/CD concepts and tooling, source control practices, and testing approaches across unit, integration, and end‑to‑end levels, and you value test coverage as a core part of delivering quality software.
You are curious and motivated by modern AI engineering, with exposure to—or a strong desire to deepen your skills in—LLMs, RAG, agentic patterns, and related platforms and frameworks. You are enthusiastic about using agentic engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code, applying them with discipline, rigour, and accountability rather than as shortcuts. Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team, you communicate clearly, contribute to technical documentation, embrace pair programming and code review as key learning mechanisms, and demonstrate a strong continuous learning mindset, personal accountability, and openness to feedback from more senior engineers.
