ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Heritage Machinery Coordinator is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and presentation of the heritage steam engines within the iconic Spotswood Pumping Station at Scienceworks. The role plays a key part in bringing this significant industrial heritage to life for visitors through engine activations, tours, demonstrations and public presentations.
Working closely with colleagues across Museums Victoria, the Heritage Machinery Coordinator supports visitor engagement programs, contributes specialist technical expertise to projects and events, and coordinates the day-to-day activities of a team of engine drivers to ensure the ongoing operation and preservation of these important heritage assets.
Some of the key duties include:
- Operating and undertaking routine maintenance of heritage steam engines and associated machinery in accordance with established procedures and standards.
- Delivering engaging tours, demonstrations and presentations to visitors and stakeholder groups.
- Coordinating the day-to-day activities of casual engine drivers, including rostering support, inductions and operational guidance.
- Collaborating with internal teams to support public programs, exhibitions and visitor engagement activities involving the heritage steam engines.
- Maintaining operational, maintenance and collection records and documentation.
The successful applicant will have:
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining heritage engines or similar industrial machinery.
- Experience coordinating staff, volunteers or contractors within a heritage, museum, industrial or technical environment.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and explain technical concepts clearly.
- Well-developed organisational and administrative skills, including record keeping and operational documentation.
- Sound knowledge of relevant safety requirements, industrial standards and Occupational Health and Safety practices.
Mandatory requirements
- Reciprocating Steam Engine HRW Licence (Class ES).
- Standard or Advanced Boiler Operation HRW Licence (Class BS or BA).
- Engineering, trade or heritage studies qualifications are desirable.
OTHER INFORMATION
This is a regular part time position 0.6 FTE. The salary on offer is a VPS3.1 Base salary of $81,496 per annum (pro rata) plus 12% superannuation.
The successful applicant is required to undergo a National Police Records Check and Working with Children Check and be assessed as suitable (new employees are required to meet this cost).
