About Us

Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the 'Courts Group'.

The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.

About the role

Judicial Registrar Roberts is seeking a legally qualified individual to be his associate.

Judicial Registrar Roberts is the Registrar of the Court of Appeal and Registrar of Criminal Appeals. The primary responsibility of those roles is to ensure the efficient and expeditious despatch of applications and appeals, ensuring they are prepared for consideration by Judges of Appeal.

This is a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience within the Court of Appeal and to work closely with a Judicial Registrar undertaking an increasingly complex and active judicial function.

The associate will play a key role in supporting the Judicial Registrar's work across a wide range of case management and judicial decision-making responsibilities across both the criminal and civil appellate jurisdictions.

The associate will also have the opportunity to work closely with other associates in the Appeals & Crime team of the registry, and undertake clerking duties for hearings in the Criminal Division on occasion.

Key accountabilities include:

Providing high-level, high-volume administrative, operational and legal support to the Judicial Registrar;
Assisting in court during directions hearings and procedural/interlocutory applications;
Liaising with Judges, legal practitioners, court staff, and members of the public;
Managing daily chambers operations, including email, calendar and telephone communications;
Coordinating meetings, preparing agendas and minutes, and contributing to improvements with court process and practice;
Conducting legal research, drafting case summaries and preparing materials for use in court;
Maintaining and managing confidential court and chambers records;
Contributing to the efficient running of the Court of Appeal's listing and case management functions; and
Providing support with the preparation of rulings, correspondence and written reasons, as required.

About You

You will have a demonstrated interest in appellate law and the administration of justice. You will bring excellent legal research and writing skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing demands in a high-pressure and sensitive environment. You will also have strong interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to working in a judicial setting. A strong academic record is essential, and post-graduate legal experience is desirable but not required. Proficiency in grammar, computer literacy, professionalism, discretion and sound judgment are critical to success in this role.
