About Us
Thornthwaite Technologies has been operating since 1933 and since the late 1970s supplying, importing and manufacturing high-quality commercial washroom and plumbing products. With over 90 years of industry heritage, our products are installed across a vast range of commercial buildings and facilities throughout Australia — from aquatic centres and sports pavilions to childcare facilities, office blocks, councils, industrial facilities and healthcare environments. Virtually every person in Australia has, at some point, used a Thornthwaite product.
We’re a close-knit, collaborative team with deep trade relationships and a strong reputation for technical excellence and customer service. As we continue to grow, we’re focused on building on that legacy and expanding our reach.
The Role
We’re looking for a technically capable and commercially driven Technical Sales & Specification Consultant to join our team. You’ll be the key point of contact for architects, hydraulic consultants, builders, plumbers and merchants — working to get our commercial washroom products specified and successfully delivered across a range of construction projects.
This is a role that blends technical depth with genuine relationship-building. You’ll be out in the market, engaging stakeholders, attending construction sites and industry events, while also managing your pipeline, preparing documentation and working with internal teams to deliver.
Location: Chatswood, NSW
Work type: Full-time | Primarily on customer sites and in our office/warehouse
Travel: Some regional and interstate travel required
Salary: Competitive salary
What You’ll Be Doing
Specification Sales & Project Identification
- Identify construction projects and potential customers by reviewing industry databases and project tracking platforms (e.g., BCI)
- Analyse architectural and hydraulic drawings, floor plans and project documentation to determine appropriate commercial washroom fixture solutions
- Ensure products are specified in fixture schedules and manage the sales cycle process throughout the different stakeholders, while providing technical assistance to architects, consultants and installers
Project & Pipeline Management
- Actively manage construction projects through our CRM system, maintaining stakeholder communication and defending specifications throughout the project lifecycle
- Coordinate with internal warehouse and supplier teams to ensure timely product delivery in line with project milestones
Commercial & Pricing Support
- Prepare pricing proposals and support commercial discussions between the company, merchants and project stakeholders
- Quote and negotiate pricing and supply terms in line with project requirements
Technical Support & Advisory
- Provide expert technical advice and training to architects, hydraulic consultants, plumbers and contractors on product selection, installation requirements and compliance
- Prepare fixture schedules and technical product selections to support specification documentation
- Deliver product presentations, demonstrations and technical training to ensure products are correctly specified and installed
- Provide on-site, over the phone support for installation, maintenance, servicing, fault finding and product performance queries for thermostatic mixing valves, digital mixing valves, sensor taps, timed flow taps, and centralised washroom systems, emergency showers/eyewash etc. It is very hands on
Stakeholder Relationships & Industry Engagement
- Cultivate strong professional relationships with key stakeholders across architectural, engineering, construction, plumbing and trade channels
- Monitor market trends and competitor activity, feeding insights back to the broader team
- Attend industry forums, trade events and professional networking activities within the plumbing and construction sectors
Collaboration
- Work closely with internal teams across sales, customer service, warehouse, and supply to ensure seamless project delivery
- Deliver well-crafted written reports, emails and presentations to customers and internal stakeholders
- Support internal product and commercial initiatives as the business continues to develop its offering over time
About You
Experience: A background in B2B technical or specification sales is preferred, ideally within the commercial plumbing/bathroom products sector. Candidates with broader commercial sales experience and a demonstrated ability to engage and influence technical stakeholders will also be considered.
Qualifications: A technical, plumbing, trade or engineering qualification is preferred. Candidates holding a degree in business, management, marketing or a related commercial discipline may be considered, if they have relevant technical experience.
Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of plumbing terminology, Australian Standards and commercial washroom products. Being comfortable with being able to pull plumbing products apart and have meaningful discussions with customers on the products is a must.
Communication: Confident, clear and professional communicator — written and verbal — with the ability to engage architects, consultants and tradespeople equally well.
Analytical Ability: Comfortable reading and interpreting architectural and hydraulic drawings, floor plans and technical project documentation.
Tech Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of CRM systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
Approach: Self-motivated, proactive, collaborative, well-presented and able to operate both independently and as part of a team.
