Primary objective
Rural Generalist and Anaesthetic services to Katherine Hospital, within the scope of a GP Anaesthetist (GPA). Anaesthetics will be
approximately 1-3 days/week, with other days in Rural Generalist roles. These may include:
- Emergency medicine: provide expertise in emergency medicine including shift coordination/supervision
- Community GP: provide GP services to Big Rivers Region community clinics supported by Katherine Hospital.
- Inpatient perioperative medicine including management of pre and post operative patients and care of surgical admissions in
collaboration with RDH specialist surgical teams and KH medical team.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide safe anaesthetic services, including elective and emergency theatre services, pre-admission clinic, Obstetric anaesthesia, pain
management, and anaesthetic/critical care support to the ED, within the scope of GPA practice. Selection of patients appropriate for
safe anaesthesia within the rural hospitals’ care and resource limitations.
2. Participate in on-call, after hours and weekend rosters.
3. Provision of accurate, timely and legible medical records, including medical reports and discharge summaries.
4. Lead and participate in continuing medical education, professional development, peer review, research and teaching.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Specific to Emergency medicine:
1. Provide high quality care and advice on the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department as a senior emergency
doctor, including leading immediate diagnostic and resuscitative care for life-threatening conditions.
2. Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the work of junior medical staff in the provision of patient care.
3. Collaborate with inpatient teams to facilitate both safe clinical handover and departmental and hospital flow. Communication with
stakeholders including paramedics and retrieval service to assist safe patient transfer when required.
4. Attending and assisting with critically unwell ward patients and neonatal resuscitation.
Specific to General practice:
1. Provide high quality primary health care services and coordination of care in keeping with best practice standards. This includes chronic
disease management, preventative health, referrals as appropriate, and timely follow up of results.
Selection criteria
Essential
2. Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine
(ACRRM) or equivalent, and registration with the Medical Board of Australia; with more than 4 years post Fellowship experience.
3. Australian citizen or permanent residency in Australia.
4. Advanced skills in anaesthetics (Advanced Certificate in Rural Generalist Anaesthesia (AC-RGA, JCCA qualification with epidurals, or
equivalent, with current CPD and recent clinical activity.
5. Broad postgraduate experience and recent relevant experience in clinical practice.
6. Demonstrated capacity to lead a multidisciplinary clinical team and provide junior medical officer supervision.
7. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills to be able to build and maintain relationships across the NT Health
sector, the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment, and ability to work well in a team.
8. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance activities.
Desirable
1. Experience in rural/remote medical practice and/or Indigenous health, with NT experience highly regarded.
2. Advanced skills training in emergency medicine.
