About the Role: The Aboriginal Health Worker plays a crucial role in delivering culturally appropriate healthcare and support services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals and families. Working alongside a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of GPs, nurses, and allied health professionals, you will provide direct client care, health education, and vital cultural advocacy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver culturally safe primary care, assisting clinical staff with assessments and follow-up care.
- Lead health education initiatives covering chronic disease, mental health, nutrition, and maternal health.
- Act as a cultural advocate, building trust with community members to encourage regular health checks.
- Maintain confidential client documentation and contribute to multidisciplinary care planning.
- Support community outreach clinics and health campaigns.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (Section 25 Anti-Discrimination Act 1991).
- Demonstrated experience working sensitively and effectively with First Nations communities.
- An understanding of the health issues, social determinants, and intergenerational trauma affecting Indigenous communities.
- Completion of, or a willingness to complete, a Certificate III/IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.
- Current Open Driver’s Licence and a valid Working with Children Check (Blue Card).
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a primary health care or an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO).
- Knowledge of local language protocols and community dynamics.
