Full Job Description

This is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Identified Position. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

Join yaliwunga as a valued Disability and Mental Health Support Worker – working alongside Aboriginal mob and young people with disabilities to live meaningful, culturally safe and more connected lives. This is not a generic support worker role and will suit someone who sees themselves as a mentor or peer-support person.

Key Responsibilities:

Deliver person-centred, trauma-informed supports aligned with participant’s personal, recreational, vocational, and/or cultural goals
Adapt to working with both youth and adult clients in varying, complex care settings
Support daily living activities (ADLs) and routines
Facilitate community access and culturally-safe social participation
Follow positive behaviour support plans and implement best practice in line with individual client needs
Transport clients safely in your own reliable and well-maintained vehicle
Maintain clear, accurate documentation and case notes
Collaborate with care teams, families, therapists, and coordinators

About You:

This is not a generic support worker role and will suit someone who sees themselves as a mentor or peer-support person – you will be proactive and focussed on walking alongside each client as they work toward meaningful goals. These goals may be personal, recreational, vocational, and/or cultural. You will be someone who is connected with the community, able to see each individual client’s goals as important and worth striving toward and constantly looking for interesting ways to overcome barriers and foster independence.

Essential Requirements:

Demonstrated experience supporting youth and adults with complex needs in a person-centred and collaborative way
Understanding of behaviour support principles
NDIS Worker Screening Check (or willingness to obtain)
Valid Driver’s Licence and reliable vehicle with insurance
Strong communication and documentation skills
Availability for weekday and/or weekend shifts
Clear and compassionate communication skills (written and verbal)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Willingness to upskill, participate actively in training and other professional development opportunities
A genuine interest in working for a small, Aboriginal-owned company whose committed to changing how NDIS supports are delivered for the benefit of our clients

Highly Regarded:

Experience working with and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in a culturally-safe way
Education, training and/or qualifications in disability, mental health or community services AND/OR lived work experience in the field
Training in PBS (Positive Behaviour Support)
Experience with complex supports
Current First Aid & CPR
