Aboriginal Health Practitioner - Research

Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) is seeking a passionate Aboriginal Health Practitioner to join our research projects aimed at improving health outcomes for Aboriginal communities.
This exciting role combines clinical care, community engagement, and research participation in a groundbreaking cardiovascular disease prevention program (Yorga Mooditj Koort (Strong Women Hearts)) delivered in partnership with the University of Melbourne and ASAVI (Australian Strep A Vaccine Initiative) supporting the vaccine development activities and Strep A infection surveillance.
You will play a key role in supporting Aboriginal people and their health through culturally safe care, education, and coordinated health services. This is a 50D identified Maximum Term position with either Full-time (1.0 FTE) or Part Time options for 10 months from start date. Part time options are flexible between 0.5 FTE and 0.8 FTE (2.5 days or 4 days of work per week).
About the Role
As an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, you will provide culturally appropriate primary health care while supporting participants involved in the YMK and ASAVI clinical trials. You will work alongside GPs, nurses, researchers, and allied health professionals to deliver integrated care that supports prevention, early intervention, and better health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Client Support

Conduct health checks, screenings and assist with health assessments.
- Support chronic disease care planning and follow-up.
- Provide culturally safe health education and advocacy for clients and families.
- Coordinate referrals and assist clients to access appropriate services.
Community Engagement

Encourage participation in heart health programs and chronic disease management.
- Facilitate client engagement through group sessions including physical activity and nutrition yarning.
- Support clients with smoking cessation and lifestyle changes.
Research & Project Support

Assist with recruitment and assessments for the YMK and ASAVI clinical trials.
- Conduct regular participant check-ins and follow-ups.
- Maintain accurate clinical and project records using Communicare and REDCap.
- Work collaboratively with the University research teams and DYHS clinical staff.
About You
Essential
-
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander pursuant to Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act and preferably female as per Section 27 of Equal Opportunity Act.
- Certificate IV or Diploma in Aboriginal Health (Certificate IV or Diploma in Aboriginal Health (AHPRA registration not compulsory).
- Understanding of key health issues impacting Aboriginal communities.
- Knowledge of public health principles including prevention and health promotion.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Sound computer literacy and ability to maintain accurate records.
Desirable
- Experience supporting research or clinical trial projects.
- Experience delivering culturally safe health promotion around cardiovascular health, nutrition, physical activity, or smoking cessation.

- Valid WA Driver’s Licence
