Wyong ED is looking for Stage 3 or 4 Advanced Emergency Medicine trainees with a passion for POCUS to join our team for Ultrasound Special Skills Placement positions available in 2027.
The Trainees will be working 0.50 FTE clinically in the Wyong Emergency Department and 0.50 FTE in the Ultrasound Special Skills Placement for a 6 months duration, with 2 positions available each year (one first half, one second half). This position will provide significant exposure to POCUS across all major modalities as recommended by ACEM.
Successfully appointed Trainees will have access to:
- Opportunities to gain significant experience and accreditation across all core Emergency Medicine POCUS examinations (eFAST, AAA, FELS, Lung, and Procedural)
- Exposure to specialised areas of ultrasound (eg. Biliary, Renal, DVT, Early Pregnancy and others) throughout the placement
- Formal accreditation of POCUS examinations through CCPU certification if desired – the term is now an accredited CCPU unit course provider with ASUM
- Protected scanning time within the Emergency Department to develop ultrasound scanning proficiency and complete logbooks for accreditation and/or CCPU certification – there is absolute separation between Ultrasound and ED clinical shifts
- Close clinical supervision, teaching, and support from a FACEM group with extensive ultrasound experience, including FACEMs with CCPU accreditation. There are now also several FACEMs working towards their DDU.
- Valuable learning experience in ultrasound from medical sonographers
- Teaching opportunities at local Ultrasound workshops

Emergency Medicine Training Network:
The Central Coast is part of the Emergency Medicine Network 2 Training Program for Advanced Trainees. Gosford & Wyong Emergency Departments are educationally networked for training with ACEM and offer a comprehensive education programme contributing to Primary exam preparation & Fellowship exam preparation. All trainees (including Unaccredited) have access to paid rostered non-clinical time. CCLHD Emergency Trainees have achieved excellent results in both Primary and Fellowship exams, with a very high pass rate and several medal winners for top mark. Both Gosford and Wyong Emergency Departments are ACEM accredited for 36 months training time (including stage .
CCLHD offers access to regular simulation training and paid, rostered, weekly education sessions for both ACEM and Unaccredited Trainees. Education sessions include regular sessions in PEM, Radiology, SIM and Ultrasound. Advanced Trainees can rotate to dedicated positions in ICU, Anaesthetics, Medical Education and Ultrasound within CCLHD and to tertiary Paediatrics, Trauma, and Retrieval through external secondments. Career opportunities may be available for Trainees progressing through training towards Consultant level.

Central Coast Emergency Medicine Departments:
Gosford Hospital is the principal referral hospital and trauma centre for the Central Coast, with over 500 inpatient beds and 24/7 access to the Emergency Department and Operating Theatres. In 2019, a $368 million dollar redevelopment delivered a new Emergency Department, ICU, Nuclear Medicine facility, Special Care Nursery and expanded Medical Imaging services.
Wyong Hospital is an acute major metropolitan hospital with over 300 beds providing inpatient, outpatient and Emergency services to residents in the northern region of the Central Coast. In 2021, a $200 million expansion delivered a new Emergency Department, ICU, Paediatric Unit, inpatient wards, theatres and expanded Medical Imaging services.
Gosford and Wyong Hospitals have busy mixed Emergency Departments with a wide variety of presentations, providing good exposure to trauma, Paediatrics, Medicine, and Surgery. Both are well supported by passionate Emergency Physicians who are committed to your development and wellbeing.
