About Our Role
Our Anaesthetics Trainees provide anaesthesia and perioperative medical care in a complex clinical environment under supervision appropriate to the applicant’s level of training and in line with recommendations of the training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) – or as part of the Diploma of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia, or training programs of the College of Intensive Care medicine (CICM) or Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) where applicable.
Trainees are expected to extend their knowledge and skills in managing anaesthesia, across multiple subspeciality areas of anaesthesia, to meet the professional standards set by ANZCA. They are required to deliver anaesthesia, perioperative care and pain management services inside and outside the operating rooms and to perform other duties during rotations to other areas as directed.

The POWH-SCH Anaesthesia Rotational Training Scheme
Our Anaesthetics trainees service Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH) and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick (SCH), both based on the Randwick Hospitals Campus, as well as rotations to different facilities and locations within the NSW health system. POWH and SCH have 14 general operating theatres, 6 nominally paediatric, with an additional specialised hybrid vascular theatre. There are separate Urology and Cardiothoracic theatres and a range of external anaesthetising locations including radiology, radiotherapy and paediatric procedural areas.
The POWH-SCH Anaesthesia Rotational Training Scheme is accredited for 156 weeks of training by ANZCA. All surgical specialty units can be completed as part of training in our network. Trainees can expect to rotate through intensive care units at POWH and/or SCH and a variety of secondments including the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Royal Hospital for Women (RHW), Coffs Harbour Base, Liverpool, Sutherland and Wollongong Hospitals. Our trainees also care for patients in the cardiac catheter labs, CCU cardioversions, radiology (adult and paediatric including MRI, neuro and other interventional radiology), and cardiac arrest calls in POWH, SCH, the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre and/or RHW.
Most trainees should expect to spend 3-6 months each year on rotation. An applicant must be eligible to be an approved vocational trainee with ANZCA by the commencement of the new clinical year. Applicants seeking ANZCA training positions in Years 1-4 are eligible to apply, however the service requirements of the department are considered when selecting seniority of applicants. These scheme positions are generally for four years (subject to satisfactory progress) for IT and Early BT trainees. Shorter contracts may be offered for those in more advanced stages of training
