Primary objective
The Chief Pilot is responsible for managing and co-ordinating all functions and responsibilities of the Northern Territory
Police Air Wing.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Enhance service delivery through operations and the effective utilisation of aircraft.
2. Ensure the operations of the work unit are contemporary and meet the changing demands of the agency.
3. Efficiently and effectively manage and maintain assets, resources and finances of the Air Wing.
4. Ensure application of aviation industry best practice in all Air Wing activities.
5. Ensure all aircraft are properly equipped, operated and maintained to the standards required by the Civil Aviation Safety
Authority (CASA) orders and regulations.
6. Ensure pilots are appropriately trained and licensed and maintain qualification currency per CASA regulations.
7. Ensure compliance with and enforcement of legislation and departmental policy in the workplace with respect to duty
of care, work health and safety and equal opportunity.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Hold a current Australian CPL (A) or ATPL (A), CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate.
2. A minimum of 4,000 hours flying experience as Pilot in Command, 1,000 hours flying experience as Pilot in Command of
a multi-engine aircraft or single engine turbine powered aircraft and 100 hours night flying experience as Pilot in
Command.
3. Significant flying experience in tropical and remote area environments including on unsealed airstrips.
4. A Command Instrument Rating (SEA or MEA) with a minimum of three Instrument Proficiency Checks / Renewals.
5. High level flying skills and airmanship together with a sound knowledge of aviation legislation and publications.
6. Relevant recent experience in single pilot operations
7. Experience in dealing with a wide range of human resource and staff management issues in the workplace.
8. Change management skills with experience in developing and refining aviation operating procedures in response to
identified changes in technology and the operating environment.
9. Highly developed written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to produce high level quality communications.
Desirable
1. Experience in the operation of pressurised turbo-prop aircraft.
2. Pilatus PC-12NG Endorsement with a comprehensive and practical working knowledge of its operating systems.
3. Hold or have held Training and Checking or ATO Flight Examiner approvals.
4. Experience in complex aircraft defect reporting and troubleshooting processes, and liaison with engineering support
personnel.
5. Knowledge of the processes and structure of the Northern Territory Police.
6. Previous experience with a law enforcement agency
