Position: Unaccredited Trainee (Registrar)

Department: Orthopaedics
Location: Tweed Valley Hospital

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity at an accredited surgical training hospital for an unaccredited Orthopaedic registrar, working in a supportive, structured teaching environment to support progression to entering advanced training.

You will be part of a collegiate team of 14 consultants and registrars working across a 7 day roster. You will have access to weekly education sessions and mentorship from consultants with an open-door policy to assist in developing your orthopaedic proficiency.

This position offers a real opportunity to expand your skills and gain valuable experience in a supportive environment.

Previous surgical experience is essential.

About Tweed Valley Hospital

This is an exciting opportunity to join Tweed Valley Hospital, your primary work location and a new, major referral hospital at the heart of the network of hospitals and health facilities across the Tweed-Byron region, also including Murwillumbah District & Byron Central Hospitals. The 723.3 million state-of-the-art hospital opened on 14 May 2024 and will deliver additional health services and bed capacity to meet the growing community's healthcare needs.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the Unaccredited Trainee in Orthopaedics is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, orthopaedic surgery patients. The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

The position supports meeting the requirements for training with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role (please address these in your response)

Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.

Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.

Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
