Full Job Description

Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government's efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats. Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.

As a Biosecurity Officer (Compliance), you will:

- Assist the team to achieve efficient and effective delivery of operational goals working under direct guidance and in accordance with relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
- As defined in the relevant operational plan, undertake tasks contributing to the protection of the Queensland biosecurity system by assisting stakeholders to manage biosecurity risks associated with diseases, pests and invasive species.
- Specific tasks supporting the above may include:
o conducting field-based monitoring, surveillance, auditing and treatment activities
o undertaking routine data/information gathering, recording and collation
o gathering evidence to assist investigations of potential legislative breaches and chemical residue impacts (e.g. field observations, sample collection, witness statements/interviews)
- Assist external stakeholders to achieve legislative compliance by responding to basic/general enquires and providing fundamental technical information. This includes ensuring that queries are escalated to a more experienced / knowledgeable colleague when required.
- Under guidance, carry out risk-based decision making within day-to-day activities, including associated documentation/record keeping.
- Support effective teamwork by contributing positively to group tasks and, where relevant, providing guidance to new/inexperienced colleagues.

What are we looking for (qualifications, registrations, experience)
- It is a mandatory requirement for a technical officer to possess an Australian diploma or advanced diploma level qualification or higher from a recognised tertiary institution.
- For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework.

The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
- Must have a current 'C' class drivers' licence.
- This position will be expected to undertake physical work, notably traverse challenging terrain including slopes, steep gradients, rocky, uneven ground in a rainforest environment. This includes being exposed to the climatic conditions in North Queensland (heat, humidity, and high rainfall) and walking long distances.
- This position will also involve driving for extended periods of time and lifting heavy objects, such as backpack sprayers (up to 20kg when filled).
