Tilt Tray Operator – Full Time

Busselton, WA | $80,000 – $100,000 per year | Retainer + Commissions
Due to continued expansion and additional trucks on the road, Bunbury Busselton Towing & Services is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Tilt Tray Operator to join our Bunbury Depot team.
This is a hands-on operational role suited to an experienced truck driver who thrives in dynamic environments including emergency breakdowns, accident recoveries, salvage operations, and specialized transport tasks.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Vehicle Loading & Transport
- Safely load and unload vehicles using tilt tray systems.
- Operate winches, straps, chains, and load restraint equipment correctly.
- Assess vehicle weight distribution and ensure load stability.
- Secure loads in accordance with Load Restraint Guide and mass regulations.
- Conduct final safety checks prior to departure.
- Deliver vehicles without damage to customer property.
Vehicle Recovery Operations
- Recover vehicles from accident scenes, highways, private properties, construction sites, underground carparks, embankments, sand, mud, and restricted-access areas.
- Perform upright recoveries of rolled or immobilized vehicles.
- Conduct site-specific risk assessments before commencing recovery.
- Establish safe working zones using lights, cones, and hazard controls.
- Work alongside emergency services and traffic control personnel when required.
- Manage high-pressure roadside environments safely and professionally.
Lifting & Equipment Operation
- Operate hydraulic tilt trays and lifting systems within rated capacities.
- Use snatch blocks, dollies, skates, and recovery attachments correctly.
- Lift and position plant, machinery, and specialty equipment as required.
- Ensure safe positioning of truck prior to lifting or tipping operations.
- Monitor surroundings to maintain public and operator safety.
Safety & Compliance
- Comply with all Road Transport, NHVR (where applicable), and Workplace Health & Safety regulations.
- Follow fatigue management requirements and complete work diaries/logbooks.
- Wear mandatory PPE at all times (high visibility clothing, steel cap boots, gloves, eye protection).
- Monitor traffic hazards when working roadside.
- Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions arise.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
Daily Pre-Start & Maintenance
- Conduct and document daily vehicle pre-start safety checks including:
- Tyres, lights, brakes, steering
- Hydraulic systems
- Winches, cables, chains, and restraints
- Fluid levels
- Inspect recovery equipment for wear or defects.
- Ensure emergency equipment (fire extinguisher, spill kit, first aid kit) is present and operational.
- Report mechanical or safety defects immediately.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete vehicle condition reports prior to loading (including photographs).
- Record and report pre-existing damage.
- Complete job sheets, electronic dispatch updates, and delivery documentation.
- Maintain accurate compliance records.
Roster & Work Conditions
- Rolling roster – 6 days on / 3 days off
- Occasional night call-outs
- Emergency breakdown and accident response work
- Must reside within 20km of Bunbury Depot with ability to store truck at home
Essential Requirements
- Minimum HR Licence
- Minimum 2 years truck driving experience
- Ability to pass Police Integrity Check
- Drug and Alcohol clearance
- Strong safety focus
- Proven problem-solving ability
- Ability to work independently in high-pressure environments
- Good customer service and communication skills
- Basic technology skills for job allocation systems
