About the role
At Eastern Health, the Haematology Service currently sits within the Department of Haematology and Medical Oncology with good linkages and relationships between the clinical staff of both specialty services.
The service is predominantly an inpatient haematology facility located at Box Hill Hospital, with laboratory sites at Box Hill Hospital, Maroondah Hospital and the Angliss Hospital. An inpatient consultative service is provided at Box Hill Hospital. Haematology laboratory services are provided 7 days per week to Box Hill, Maroondah and Angliss Hospitals. Haematology Consultants and Registrars located at Box Hill Hospital provide consultative support for patients at the Angliss Hospital.
Patients requiring care under a specialist Haematology Consultant are transferred to Box Hill Hospital if clinically appropriate. At Maroondah Hospital, patients requiring specialist haematological care are often transferred to the Oncology Unit at that site or managed under General Medicine Consultants, with further support provided through a Haematology outpatient clinic, which has been operational at Maroondah Hospital since 2010. A large proportion of Haematology inpatient activity relates to patients with malignant diseases such as leukaemia and lymphoma. Most malignant haematology is managed through outpatient clinics. Many patients with acute leukaemia have their treatment initiated as an inpatient but receive ongoing care through Hospital in the Home (HITH) or day oncology services.
The Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Lead position requires expertise in the disease AML. This will be used to provide leadership to the global Haematology Unit for optimal care for patients with AML. This will include lead governance for maintaining the AML clinical trial portfolio, keeping the AML treatment guidelines up-to-date based on all the latest relevant literature, collaborative participation in ALLG-led trials and research, presenting at relevant conferences and preparing journal manuscripts.
About you
To be successful in this role you will possess:
- Must be a registered medical practitioner with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency).
- Must have significant clinical experience, with experience and training in Haematology.
- Must hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) or hold equivalent qualifications to enable recognition as a specialist Haematologist and a dual Fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia is desirable.
- Must be recognised by Medicare as a specialist in haematology.
- Must participate in relevant college continuing education programs particularly related to Haematology.
- Highly developed interpersonal and leadership experience
- A strong commitment to high quality care

- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Healthcare workers are strongly recommended to follow COVID vaccination recommendations provided in the Australian Immunisation handbook (based on ATAGI advice). Seasonal vaccination against influenza is a mandatory requirement of this role, and an offer is conditional on this being up to date prior to employment.
