Game Designer — Slot Math & Mechanics

Role summary

Design and balance slot game math models, reel mechanics, and feature mechanics to deliver engaging, profitable, and compliant casino-style slot experiences across casino, social, and mobile platforms.

Key responsibilities

Design RTP models, volatility profiles, hit frequency, payback curves, and payout distributions to meet commercial targets and regulatory constraints.
Create and document reel layouts, paytables, symbol weights, paylines/ways, and virtual reel mapping (VRM).
Develop feature mechanics (free spins, bonus games, cascading wins, respins, jackpots, buy features) with clear triggers, payouts, and probabilities.
Build and validate simulation models (Monte Carlo) to verify theoretical RTP, variance, and expected return under large-sample play.
Implement and test RNG interactions, seeding, and statistical sampling; ensure randomness and fairness metrics.
Balance game economy across currency types (real-money, virtual currency) and progression systems (levels, volatility-based rewards).
Produce technical design documents, math specifications, and implementation-ready spreadsheets or scripts for engineers.
Work with artists, sound designers, and producers to align mechanics with UX and theme while maintaining math integrity.
Analyze live game telemetry and KPIs (RTP drift, session length, ARPU, conversion, retention) and iterate math to optimize performance.
Ensure compliance with jurisdictional regulations and certification requirements; prepare certification test cases and evidence.
Mentor junior designers on probability theory, simulation, and best practices for slot math.

Required qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Game Design, or related quantitative field.
3+ years’ experience designing or validating casino-style slot math and mechanics (real-money or social casino).
Strong skills in probability, statistics, stochastic processes, and numerical methods.
Proficiency with Monte Carlo simulation and statistical analysis (Python, R, MATLAB, or similar).
Experience creating and auditing virtual reel mapping, hit frequency calculations, and RTP derivations.
Familiarity with RNG principles, casino regulations, and certification processes.
Excellent spreadsheet skills (advanced Excel, formulas, pivot tables) and ability to produce clear math spec documents.
Strong communication and cross-discipline collaboration skills.

Preferred

Experience with game engines or backend integration (Unity, C#, server-side game logic).
Knowledge of performance KPIs for casino/social games and experience using analytics tools (SQL, Amplitude, Tableau).
Experience with progressive jackpot systems, bonusing economy design, or free-to-play monetization models.
Prior work with certification labs or regulatory bodies.
