About the role:
The Senior Technical Officer provides proactive technical support for practical teaching, research, and related activities within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. The role focuses on managing laboratory facilities, developing and preparing experiments, maintaining equipment and procedures, and offering specialist guidance on instrumentation and safety. It primarily supports microbiology, molecular, and cell science disciplines, while also coordinating support across the school and liaising with external suppliers.
As a Senior Technical Officer, you will:
- Support teaching and research through preparation of materials, delivery of technical training, and active involvement in practical classes, projects, and experimental design.
- Assist in the design and development of complex experiments, prepare and develop equipment and manage accurate and up to date written procedure
- Provide expertise to research staff and students in the operation of instrumentation, techniques, equipment repair, laboratory safety, software, and procedures to students, academics, and technical staff, fostering capability and confidence across the school.
- Oversee laboratory operations by managing day‑to‑day workflows, maintaining equipment, ensuring safety compliance, and coordinating resources, stocks, and facilities across Molecular Biology teaching and research spaces. Support the development and delivery of project work, practicals, and other teaching activities in the Molecular Biology discipline to ensure an innovative, engaging and safe student experience.
- Promote and ensure the implementation of all University policies that relate to the areas for which the position is responsible, particularly those relating to occupational health and safety and risk management and drive continuous improvement by developing technical solutions, identifying opportunities to enhance processes, and contributing to strategic initiatives that strengthen teaching and research outcomes.
- Build strong relationships and leadership capacity by coaching team members, engaging collaboratively across the University, adapting to change, and delivering a positive, customer‑focused experience for students and stakeholders.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- Degree in a relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist knowledge; or equivalent combination of experience and/or education/training
- Experience providing professional advice and delivering outcomes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
- Ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills
- Experience working across teams
- Understanding of policies and governance
- Experience working in a related field or discipline in higher education or a similar large complex environment
- Good knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working with biological and chemical hazards
- Experience with genomics, cell culture and histological techniques
