Primary objective
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the intern pharmacist will provide a range of clinical and operational hospital pharmacy services at
Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals while completing a recognised Intern Training Program.

Context statement
An interest or prior experience in improving health outcomes in regional areas or complex cross-cultural environments will be viewed
favourably.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide clinical pharmacy services in accordance with departmental guidelines, Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia standards

of practice for clinical pharmacy, and the Northern Territory Medicines, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act.
2. Dispense medicines for inpatient, outpatient and discharge supply and provide culturally appropriate medication education to patients

to optimise therapeutic outcomes.
3. Participate in ongoing professional development, continuing education for pharmacy and other hospital staff and performance review.
4. Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards align with this role and participate

in quality improvement projects, the monitoring of medicine use and implementation of medication management related policy
documents.

5. Prepare non-sterile extemporaneous pharmaceuticals and complete relevant training.
6. Participate in the weekend service as rostered.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in

order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
8. Fulfil the competencies for this role as outlined in the Northern Territory Public Sector Capability and Leadership Framework.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree or equivalent qualification in Pharmacy and eligibility for provisional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
2. Demonstrated understanding of the role of a hospital pharmacist including entry level knowledge of pharmacology, pharmacotherapy

and ability to apply knowledge to practice based situations.
3. Sound communication skills (written and oral) and ability to work well with others and contribute positively to the team.
4. Strong organisational and time management skills, self-motivated and a demonstrated ability to prioritise and problem solve with

initiative to optimise patient care and complete intern training program coursework.
5. Demonstrated willingness and ability to participate in required training and commitment to continuing education and professional

development.
6. Adaptable and flexible to change to meet the patient’s and departmental needs.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
