Primary objective
Provide high quality clinical care to patients at Alice Springs Hospital, Alice Springs and Barkly regions, including fringe areas of Western
Australia and South Australia under the guidance and supervision of specialist staff within the Emergency Department.
Context Statement
The Alice Springs Hospital Emergency Department provides acute emergency care to approximately 50000 patients annually, with around
a 40% admission rate. The department is staffed by Fellow of Australian College of Emergency Medicine doctors (FACEM) (on site from
0730-2400 and on call from midnight) Senior Registrars, Registrars SRMOS, RMOs and Interns. We work in a team environment with
nursing and allied health staff.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high quality clinical care for patients presenting to the Emergency Department
2. Admit, manage and discharge patients from the service under the supervision of Senior Medical Staff.
3. Participate in a 24 hour roster as required and act as the senior doctor on night shift, with FACEM on call from home.
4. Ensure adequate supervision of and participation in teaching and education programs for junior staff.
5. Participate in the assessment process of the training scheme for which they are enrolled.
6. Provide medico-legal and other reports under supervision as appropriate.
7. Participate in research, educational and professional development.
8. Initiate and participate in quality assurance activities, peer review practices and continuing Medical Education.
9. Participate in other activities as directed by the Director of Emergency Department, or the Director of Medical Services.
10. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Eligible to undertake the pre vocational FACEM training program pathway or equivalent
3. Sound clinical knowledge in assessment and management of patients and a commitment to provide appropriate high-quality service
4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work
environment, as a team member.
5. Ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team
6. An interest in and a commitment to improving Aboriginal health.
7. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance activities.
8. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
1. Previous experience in ICU, Anaesthetics and Paediatrics (or equivalent critical care and paediatric rotations) — with proven ability to
apply cross-specialty experience to emergency medicine.
