Primary objective
Work towards Rural Generalist fellowship and independent practice with one or more advanced skills, whilst caring for
patients in one or more regions of the Northern Territory.
Context statement
Rural Generalist Trainees (RGTs) are medical officers employed in hospitals or community settings whose employment
counts towards vocational training leading to Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners-Rural
Generalist (RACGP-RG) and/or Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM). Senior Rural
Generalist Trainees (SRGTs) are medical officers who have completed or almost completed FRACGP-RG or FACRRM and
undertake further employment to consolidate or gain new knowledge and skills. Delivery of rural generalist healthcare by
RGTs and SRGTs in regional hospitals and remote areas involves small plane travel and overnight or longer stays.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under necessary supervision, provide comprehensive clinic and/or hospital-based care to patients, their family and
community; all accurately documented and communicated in a timely manner.
2. Communicate effectively with patients, their family and carers in an age- and culturally appropriate manner.
3. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures to ensure high quality, safe
services and workplaces.
4. Develop and maintain knowledge and skills in clinical and public health medicine through continuous medical education,
professional development, peer review, research, teaching, quality improvement activities and clinical audits as
appropriate.
5. Participate in after-hours and/or remote clinic rosters as determined by the Director of Medical Services or a delegate.
6. Complete outstanding vocational training requirements while balancing direct clinical responsibilities.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. General medical and/or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. By employment commencement, be a vocational Rural Generalist trainee or an RACGP-RG or ACRRM fellow.
3. Broad postgraduate medical experience, particularly in one or more of the following disciplines: Aboriginal health, critical
care, women’s health, paediatrics, Mental health and primary health care.
4. Demonstrated interpersonal skills that promote effective teamwork, patient safety, and patient-centred care.
5. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated experience in the desired procedural speciality (where applicable).
2. Previous experience living and working in remote communities or other resource-limited settings.
