Ravenhall is Victoria’s largest, medium security prison for adult sentenced and unsentenced males. Its contemporary campus-style design provides a safe and humane environment that enables and nurtures GEOs Continuum of Care operating philosophy.
Ravenhall also has a dedicated Forensic Mental Health Unit, a specialised Closed Supervision Unit for prisoners with significant challenging behaviours, and a small Mission Based Unit for prisoners who have never been in custody before. In recognition of the importance of Continuum of Care, Ravenhall extends its presence into the community by providing ex-prisoners with access to post-release support at GEO’s Community Reintegration Centre.
With key focus on young adult offenders, Aboriginal and those with complex and mental health needs, prisoners at Ravenhall have significant opportunities to engage in work, education, programs and services, through an evidence based approach to reduce re-offending.

The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Specialist at Ravenhall Correctional Centre plays a crucial in assisting in accessing drug and alcohol programs within the prison, aiding in their journey towards recovery. With a specific emphasis on harm minimization, AOD Specialists are responsible for leading programs and services that promote heightened awareness of harm reduction strategies, both during incarceration and after release. Additionally, AOD Specialists conduct group-based programs designed to enhance self-efficacy by fostering the development of effective coping strategies and relapse prevention plans. This position reports to the Senior Clinician and is located at Ravenhall Correctional Centre, and is also required at times to travel to GEO's Community Reintegration Centre.
As the AOD Specialist you will:
- Undertake AOD screenings and assessments.
- Facilitate group programs to increase substance use awareness, harm minimisation and relapse prevention.
- Prepare and complete case notes, assessment reports, individualised AOD treatment plans and treatment completion reports.
- Facilitate Identified Drug User (IDU) reviews, facilitate brief interventions and recommend treatment strategies for minimising risk and relapse.
- Effectively, efficiently and accurately manage client data entry into identified systems.
- Periodically provide post-release support to people who have left prison to reduce their risk of relapse.
- Contribute to case-management planning and case reviews and community reintegration plans.
- Collaborate with custodial and non-custodial staff, health services and other Alliance Partners and other providers, to develop effective working relationships.
- Participate in community activities and relevant cultural and religious celebrations.
- Participate in supervision and professional development opportunities consistent with the AOD Specialist role.
- Participate in peer supervision with colleagues and support new team members through observation of your practice.
- Facilitate training as required for custodial and non-custodial staff.
To be successful in the role of AOD Specialist you will have:
- A relevant tertiary health qualification such as social work, counselling, psychology, nursing, or a Certificate IV in AOD, Diploma in AOD, or equivalent extensive experience in the AOD sector.
- Demonstrated experience in AOD screening and assessment, harm minimisation education, and person-centred care and recovery-focused support for people with AOD concerns and dual diagnosis.
- Demonstrated contemporary knowledge of AOD harm minimisation principles and strategies.
